Biggest adjustment between low 80s to mid 70s?

Been stuck shooting in the low 80s on average for a while now. Sort of settled into that range and stuck. Typically 80-83 then will occasionally have a great day and go upper 70s. An occasional off day is usually more 85-87.

So what key adjustment would leap me to the next interval of upper 70s on average with a good round being closer to par?

1) Hit the fairway
2) Hit the green
3) Become a good 2 putter. Inside 3' needs to feel like an easy make for you.
4) Practice 100 in. That should be automatic hit the green from inside 100 yards.

This is insanely over simplified, but all true.

When I'm struggling off the tee, I can rely on my inside 100 game and putter. If the putter is cold, its going to be a long day.

Be realistic about how far you actually hit your irons. Don’t base your yardages on career best hits. In truth, most amateurs miss greens short. Very rarely do you see an approach shot over the green.

In short … drop the ego and take one more club and swing easy.

I miss some putts that I just need to make.

Shot 81 Sunday. 4 birdies, missed 2 short ones and had a drive OB.

Drive inbounds or make the short ones, and 79 is mine.

Golf is hard.

My past has shown this to be the difference between 80s and 70s. For me anyway. High 70s to mid is putting.

And it’s easier to hit a green from the fairway.

I had to practice a lot. But the other jump i had was anytime i hit a bad tee shot or approach, i ask myself "what is the easiest way to make bogey". This mentality change really helped me to get in and stay in 70's.

Played Sunday and first two holes, couldn't hit the fairway. Bagged the driver and played my 3 "hybrid-iron" off the tee, unless it was an extra wide fairway. Shot 75. Keeping it in the fairway off the tee is big.
ETA: Play to your strengths. I'm garbage from 80 and in. I laid up to 120ish (pitching wedge) and had much better success hitting GIR.

I always felt my game made a big jump when I got better from 175 yards - 240 yards. I know that goes against conventional wisdom, but I always had a decent short game, but didn’t have great distance. When I got better from 175-200 yards I now hit more greens, which at least keeps me at par on the hole. Then the ability to occasionally reach the shorter par 5’s in two gave me good scoring opportunities to erase a bogey or two.

Our regular game is a birdie game. Once I got away from the idea of needing to birdie even from out of trouble, things got better. Where can I get this ball to make par at worst bogey, is the new thought for me.

I am spoiled in CENLA. Our courses only have penal rough a couple times per year. I am often better off just outside the fairway

In this day and age, download a good free golf app that tracks scores, fairways hit/missed, putts, etc. Then be honest with yourself about where and how you’re losing strokes.

But the easy answer is work on short game.

Putting, putting and putting. I'd guess you're hovering around 35 putts per round.

Short game.

Known several guys that went to Q School, getting up and down and putting separates the best from the rest.

You take a bent piece of steel, swing it as hard as you can without falling down and strike a high energy ball....

What could go wrong.

- Figure out your carry distances for each club to within a couple yards (average of 10-20 shots). Spot check regularly.

- Play or practice twice as much as you do now

- Putt a lot

- practice 20-50 yard pitches

It’s all short game practice from here. Lots of guys shoot around even par & don’t hit it much better than you, I’d bet. But they get up & down from everywhere.

You’ll be amazed how much better your ball striking will be once you get confident in your short game

Saturday I shot under 80 for the second time ever. This is what caused my success. I finally get like I was true to my distances.
