10 at Riviera. Is it as glamorous as the media puts on?Posted by ReauxlTide222

I don’t get the same feeling they have when watching these guys play it. Heck I’m not sure the players respect the hole. They don’t really revel in it at all.
Another point..
It’s a 3 wood to the left. How do so many if these guys leave it to the right? It’s dead over there.

Its a gimmicky hole but it works. Trouble everywhere near the green and the layup isn't an easy shot either. I watched a bit of the featured groups earlier and pretty much everyone made a mess of the hole. The common strategy is to just blast it near the green and hope to get lucky.

I mean, I’m not sure this is a bad thing. It’s a short par 4 where players (used to) have to make a decision on whether to go for it, and then it’s diabolical around the greens.
I think it’s a fun hole that used to be a little bit more fun when people couldn’t hit the ball quite as far.

Having played the hole, it's like trying to land your approach shot on a dining room table. The green is fairly segmented and there are multiple levels and everything slopes away toward the bunkers, a la Pinehurst #2.
The tee shot isn't a gimme either.

"Players" consider it one of the greatest par 4s in all of golf

Depends on the pin location.

As a short par 4, its withstood the test of time of the longer hitters. Lots of other great holes in golf had to be adjusted because you could drive post the hazards.

I'd give good odds on your birdies

There was a piece this week that it’s become too short and the green is too extreme now, so there’s zero benefit to laying up. The idea used to be that you chose to go for it but if you didn’t pull it off, you likely were making bogey or worse. Or you laid up and had a relatively easy wedge shot for your second. But the green has shrunk and they stimp it out to 13 and you can’t spin a 60 yard wedge enough to hold the green unless you hit it to the absolute perfect spot.
They’ve done the “Sabermetrics” on it and like OP said, the play is to the front left of the green cause that your best statistical chance to make birdie. Even if you go in the front bunker or long left, you’ve got a better chance for a four than from the layup zone

Now seems like a good time to bump this thread.

Max Homa probably thinks it's a pretty neat hole.
Harris is at Texas now.
