Why does Destiny 2 get a bad rap?

I always heard bad things about it. Gave it a try since it’s free and I’ve been playing for over a week now enjoying it

It did when it released. Tons of criticism about releasing a game that basically could have just been an expansion on the first game.
Make sure you are looking at reviews and feedback that are recent because my understanding is they got it turned around for the better awhile back.

It was a glorified expansion pass.

Right.
I've just got back into it and it is far far better than it was a year ago. It was an abortion of a game when it dropped.

If you are a day 1 player there is absolutely nothing to do right now
With this new "season" (postponed until 11/10/20) they will effectively be launching Destiny 3 while sunsetting content (getting rid of old stuff) in order to take it offline and literally recode it.
I have mixed feelings but we'll see

Overpromised, underdelivered.
Neverending grind.

Yea I realize that. I got D1 when the taken king dropped and enjoyed it immensely up till the end. When I figured out D2 sucked and would be a rolling project I figured I'd sit it out for a year and see where it ended up.
My gaming days are about over but if I stay with destiny I'll do the same thing again. Sit it out until I can bulk buy a year or two worth of new content for cheap.

I have gotten an inch lately to play because it is such a smooth shooter imo. But it's hollow to the core.

I played Destiny at launch on the PS4 and through most of the DLC. The game felt wonderist. (Made up word)
I played Destiny 2 a little after launch on PC. The game felt small, and more repetitive. Imo, it was a worse game.

A week isn’t enough time to have grinder for anything.
Game was awful at launch for hardcore players coming from D1. I bought the $100 season pass version and never even played one of the first DLC’s, that was how bad it was.
Then took a very long hiatus and came back for the revamped Trials and had some fun for a month or so playing again, but couldn’t go on much longer than that. I’m likely finished with the franchise.

Some friends of mine went back and are enjoying it, but it had such a meh launch that I can’t make myself do it

Some of the best gameplay mechanics in an FPS out there. Lack of end-game content was killer to the game through the first two expansions. Progression is entirely too expansion driven for an MMO-model. Should have just stuck to the incremental patch progression system with major expansions operating as a mini-reset like every other game in its genre. It may not be unique, but I don’t think there’s any doubt that it’s the most effective model at this point.

Gameplay mechanics are great, some of the best imo. Beautiful looking game, especially on PC. I know that only goes so far. When my group gets burned out, we drop it for several months. But, we always end up going back to it and having a blast.

Its great fun when you're a single guy and have a group to play with for hours on end. The game play and having a good squad make the game ultra fun.
Once you're married and drinking beer in the recliner with a headset on for 6 hours is frowned upon and youre buddies are all gone anyway, it gets way less fun really fast
