Goldeneye was the origin of MP gameplay with friends.
Halo: CE or Halo 2 is the GOAT simply for their impact on MP gaming.

I'm sorry, but I could still load up Halo 3 and be happy playing it only for a while. One of, if not the best IMO.

Do yall even DOOM?
Doom and Doom Eternal are really good, but don't top the list for me. I've beaten both on Ultra Nightmare so I'd say I've reached mastery of the mechanics
Doom 2016 is a masterpiece in storytelling and pacing with lots of epic moments, but is mechanically uninteresting. Can sleepwalk through most fights using whatever you want, especially the SSG
Doom Eternal rectifies the above with a robust resource-based and weakpoint-focused combat system, but it's too far a swing in the other direction. Felt like I needed a xanax after some of the big fights. Felt like a job to play at the higher difficulties, especially the trash DLCs. Storytelling and general narrative direction were absolute trash, it's like they told the interns to play Doom 2016 and then write a sequel

Goldeneye should be in the hall of fame. It completely changed the landscape of gaming.
Halo 2 and Halo 3 were some major fun. Halo 2 was the last of the LAN party greats. Remember all of us Juniors and Seniors in high school loading up our CRT TVs and xboxes to meet at my friends den to play all night. This carried into college where we had LAN parties over the dorm room network. Halo 3 introduced the Build mode and we had some pretty epic games on homemade maps.
Modern Warfare blew me away when it came out. The simple set up with the simple set of kill streaks. Nothing seemed overpowered, the maps were memorable.
World at War doesn't get the same multiplayer love but I know that I spent countless hours on that multiplayer as well and it also gave us Zombies.
Then I think we reach the pinnacle of FPS: MW2, BLOPS, MW3, and BLOPS2...
Those games built off of the strong foundations of MW and WaW and while they added a ton in terms of kill streaks, it still felt fairly balanced... but then we moved into the wall running, flying, super slides, frenetic movements of the last 10 years.
I think Battlefield 3, Bad Company, and eventually Battlefield 4 were some stellar games as well.
The more recent games have all become too complicated and boggy and too focused on how fast and unrealistic can I move. Instead of playing a war game were were playing an action movie.
I don't know how to fix it.

Doom and Quake for us old people. Especially Quake, was a big step forward.
Goldeneye for local MP
Half-life for playing across networks and then the WWW.
Halo 3 for bringing it all together with speed, graphics and global play.
Then we finally get to CODs, which were fabulous.

If you all liked F.E.A.R. check out the indie Trepang 2. Its a lot of fun.
My two favorite FPS are Half Life 2 and Titanfall 2. Honorable mention to Killzone 2 ...wish Guerrilla would get back into the Killzone business at some point.

are you asking what's the best shooter or what has the most nostalgia? Golden eye is actually pretty terrible shooter. it was in right time at right place for most of our age group.
just of top my head id say the modern DOOM games and the first three HALO games, and titan fall 2 would be contenders.
if we want to talk about from a MP perspective, i think overwatch, counterstrike, and halo need to be in there.

Halo. No matter how many times I play through the campaign it never gets old. You really have to learn to like every weapon. I'm still struggling with that

everything old is terrible if you frame it like this. have to compare it to what was out at the time and what it kickstarted for the industry

Surprised not to see Counter Strike on this list. Pretty much catapulted the E-Sports FPS scene.
