Ubisoft Exec Says Gamers Need to Get 'Comfortable' Not Owning Their Games for Subscription

Guess I missed the price decrease announcement since people won't actually own anything, not that I've bought any of their weak games recently.

"One of the things we saw is that gamers are used to, a little bit like DVD, having and owning their games. That's the consumer shift that needs to happen. They got comfortable not owning their CD collection or DVD collection. That's a transformation that's been a bit slower to happen [in games]. As gamers grow comfortable in that aspect… you don't lose your progress. If you resume your game at another time, your progress file is still there. That's not been deleted. You don't lose what you've built in the game or your engagement with the game. So it's about feeling comfortable with not owning your game.
"I still have two boxes of DVDs. I definitely understand the gamers perspective with that. But as people embrace that model, they will see that these games will exist, the service will continue, and you'll be able to access them when you feel like. That's reassuring.

Of all the companies who can talk shite about this, Ubisoft should be pretty far down the list.
They are hardly known for major innovation in their games. Instead, they tend to be known for majorly dropping the ball upon release of their games along with major price slashes quickly afterward.

Ubisoft games are for kids and braindead adults that enjoy tedious, checklist gameplay.

What, you didn't like open world Valhalla where you travel for 30 minutes across an unused landscape, doing nothing in-between?

Then theyll have to get comfortable with more game piracy

I think Guru Larry put it best.
He said that Ubisoft changed their tactics on combatting piracy after roughly Rainbow Six 3 (where they fricked up by requiring a CD be in the drive… on a game they sold digitally and had forgotten they had done so) by going from intrusive DRM to just making shite games no one wanted.

I was semi-interested in the Avatar game because I love Avatar but I had no idea it came out last month. Great marketing job they did there.
Apparently it's a typical Ubisoft game: very good looking and smooth but hollow

This along with cloud streaming is the endgame for digital distribution.

I put well over 100 hours into Odyssey, so I was stoked for Valhalla. I proceeded to tap out from boredom after 5-10 hours.

If people wouldn’t be so into pre-ordering shitty games and instead just wait until it comes out

There's plenty to do if you explore. Valhalla's big problem was how slow Eivor moved. Was like he/she was trying to run through mud.

The issue is pretty succinctly laid out by Larrian's CEO:
quote:
“Whatever the future of games looks like, content will always be king,” Vincke said. “But it’s going to be a lot harder to get good content if subscription becomes the dominant model and a select group gets to decide what goes to market and what not. Direct from developer to players is the way.”
“Getting a board to okay a project fueled by idealism is almost impossible and idealism needs room to exist, even if it can lead to disaster. Subscription models will always end up being cost/benefit analysis exercises intended to maximize profit.”
“There is nothing wrong with that but it may not become a monopoly of subscription services. We are already all dependent on a select group of digital distribution platforms and discoverability is brutal. Should those platforms all switch to subscription, it’ll become savage.”
“In such a world by definition the preference of the subscription service will determine what games get made. Trust me — you really don’t want that.”
“You won’t find our games on a subscription service even if I respect that for many developers it presents an opportunity to make their game. I don’t have an issue with that. I just want to make sure the other ecosystem doesn’t die because it’s valuable.”

I love the subscription model with Game Pass. Haven't seen any reason to subscribe to Ubisoft+ yet. It would be awesome if they could work out a deal with Game Pass like EA Play did, but honestly I haven't used that much either.
The best part about Game Pass is I'm not paying $70 to buy a game I might not like. I get to try out a game for as long as I want, and if I love it I can buy it at bargain prices a year later when it's on sale.

Heaven forbid making better games be their focus. No, let's instead try to nickel and dime people into essentially poorer games.

That's really the only benefit I can think of, but then that dovetails back into not making games which are enjoyable enough to get enough consumers buying them to generate enough of a profit.

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag was probably their pinnacle. AC Odyssey was good but had a few flaws, and Valhalla had potential that they ruined because of bloat.

Has clearly not been the case so far. From what I've seen, the result has been far better indie games because developers can land favorable contracts with Game Pass. I guess time will tell.

I haven’t bought a Ubisoft game since 2012 so I’m pretty comfortable with that already
