The most important attribute of a game?

For you that is, and how old are you?
i got to thinking about this while playing FF7 rebirth. While i am enjoying the game it utterly shits on the most important quality of a game that i value, respecting my time.
The little things that infuriate me playing it wouldn't have phased me in other stages of my life though. So got me to wondering what I looked for or what impressed me the most at what ages.
really young= graphics (this was the time of the ever increasing graphic wars)
20's sheer amount of shite to do (20's me probably would give ff7 rebirth 10/10)
30's: technical achievements
40's: succinct and streamlined (i dont need to see my character climb a ladder for 10 seconds multiple times a play session). open world games with map barf all over, im really over those.

Am I entertained while playing it?

With the price of games, I don't want to finish it in 2 days. I want a game that can entertain me with different things to do, not just get through the story.
I'm 38.

Performance/stability. Does the game work or do I have to wait for the devs to finish their job with a day one/week one patch? This somehow became the norm.

it needs to be fun first and foremost

I agree. Games and movies are so self indulgent and disrespectful of the audience's time these days

I want a good story
Why can’t anybody make a new skyrim or fnv

When I was a kid it was more about games I could beat. Since NES and even a lot of SNES games were hard as balls.
Nowadays with my limited time it’s more about games I can enjoy for a hour or two without having to sit through endless cutscenes. Looking at you God of War.

God damn it, Guacho. You said both Skyrim and FNV, so I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or sincere

Or maybe that was the point, and if so, well done

Story line. Mid 30s and I despise multiplayer at this point. Give me a good single player story to get fully immersed in. Witcher 3, HZD, red dead etc

Mid-30s and my criteria has become: is this game finished or am I paying to beta test?
I don’t play many games anymore

To answer, I play different games for different reasons. Some I play for the story, some I play for the gameplay. So both are equally important, and if you can offer both, all the better.
One thing I’ve found that I do kind of require is that I like the art style. Graphics are welcome to be hyper realistic, but it’s not required. I’ll enjoy an Ori as much as a Cyberpunk. But I have a really hard time getting myself to play something that I just don’t enjoy looking at.
Eta: Late 30’s

I'm the opposite of this. I'm in mid 40s and I hate story games (except Witcher 3). Too time consuming. I'd rather an online shooter. Not much time commitment, just zone out after a long day and play. 90% of my game time is Halo.

I like a good story but the game needs to be fun first. Its why I don't like RDR2. Actually I think RDR1 might be the only Rockstar game I like. The GTA games aren't fun either.
Games that are overly difficult just for the sake of being difficult are unplayable too. Bloodbourne and all the Souls games are the main examples. Bloodbourne's story apparently doesn't even come together until the end of the game and even then its not that clear. That's another thing that bothers me.

I am getting some incredible mileage out of Fallout 4 since every time I try to progress the storyline I will find at least 2 more quests but I am in no rush since this will carry me all the way to EA College Football.

For me, it’s immersion. I like to feel engrossed in the world and what I’m doing. I love a story and characters, too, but they’re not a requirement.
RTS games were fun because I felt like I was “building” something.
RPGs were great because I was enjoying the story and characters, and others were great because of the choices (Witcher 3, KOTOR, Baldur’s Gate 3, etc).
Sometimes, it’s fun to just have a button-mashy combat game with bright colors.
For sports games, it’s all about the strategy and getting some wish fulfillment to roll play as the coach making the decisions with the roar of the crowd, the stadium, and the momentum all making it fun.
For FPS, racing, and fighting games it was always about the competition with my friends, often us as kids playing split screen.
I do not.
