Just got Skyrim Anniversary edition for free on PS+. I’ve never played an Elder Scrolls game before.

My RPG experience is lacking and mainly with the FromSoftware games.

So what am I in for? Any particular tips for the start of the game?

Skyrim is an extremely forgiving RPG. It's fairly hard to completely frick yourself over on your build. Just do a build that seems fun to you and then really immerse yourself in the world. Don't blow through the main quest. Like most ES games, it's fairly lame. The magic is in the world-building and side quests. Really get out there and explore. Try to minimize using fast travel except to avoid backtracking.

Just know that you're probably going to end up being a sneaky stealth archer unless you actively try to play something else

Appreciate this particular tidbit. I’m not a fan of bows and archery in other games so I’ll try to keep my eye out and avoid this path if at all possible

Why kid yourself? Just start off with a bow and light armor.... You'll end up there anyway.

I'm a hardcore mage in RPGs, so I managed to get through an entire playthrough as a pure mage. But I also think I might have installed a few mods to improve it a bit

To the OP, it isn't that other builds aren't fun, it's that sniping NPCs with a single shot while Sneaking is just incredibly fun and fulfilling.

Quicksave often.
Do side quests.
Don’t ignore crafting, enchanting, and blocking.

and don't piss off mammoths and giants

Watching a troll drop from, like 300 yards, will make your day

Also, mammoths are pets of giants.

If you shoot a mammoth, a giant IS coming for you

OP, ignore them. Go poke at a giant early in the game. It’s one of Skyrim’s little pleasures. Just save first

That's fair.

I never saw the first giant that got me. One moment I was walking. . .just left Whiterun. . .suddenly I am hurtling into the sky, ragdoll-style

Dug into this for an hour or two last night. Went into some cave system to find a golden claw.

Already struggling with keeping my weight under 300. Not sure what to do about that right now but I'm sure this will be addressed. Also, the combat seems clunky and weird at first but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Definitely intriguing though and I'm looking forward to spending a lot of time during the long Thanksgiving break.

One of the GOAT gaming experiences, that's what.

I wish I could relive the first experience playing that game

Breton or highelf sneak archer will be your main jam w/o mods.

Just enjoy the game and play how you like.
