All the last two years has reinforced is that I made a great decision going with my 5800x3d/3080FE build and I still can’t believe Josh and I were able to procure the 3080 in the fashion we did
Just gonna keep on keeping on for another year or two

Still feels like a fever dream

I miss the days when a new generation of gpus would be a definate upgrade. The new midrange would match the old high end and the new high end would be far beyond the old one. Isn't that how it used to be? What happened? I feel like I'm going to have to wait multiple generations to justify and upgrade.

So, it still does, to an extent. Traditionally, the XX70 matches the previous XX90. The problem is that the “mid range” now costs $800.

Not really. Even going back to the GTX 6xx and HD 6xxx

Man I feel the exact opposite, so glad I made the jump and got familiar with DDR5 and AM5 across the board. Was so much new shite to learn but damn it was fun. Still the top 7700X/4070 score in the world.
Even more so now with Zen 5 starting to get closer and closer, I'll preorder and plop that 8700X in nice and quick and probably make back most of my money re-selling the 7700X.

Learning new systems and platforms is always fun, but I think Benny is more talking about time value. I don't know what you were upgrading from, so the 4070 might have been awesome for you. But Benny's 3080 is the near exact equivalent in performance to your 4070, and he got an extra two years or so with his card while you were presumably dealing with lower performance holding out. On the CPU front, your chip is better in productivity tasks and they both trade blows in gaming: yours is better in games that aren't cache sensitive; his is better in games that are. But while less pronounced than the GPU situation, he got to enjoy that level of performance for a year or so before you purchased your CPU, and he wasn't buying into different platform to do it.
No right or wrong. It's just a matter of priorities, timing, and disposable income

Think you can get better for $700?
After a cursory glance, I doubt it. The margins are razor thin at that price point right now. If someone had to build now and only had that budget and not a penny more, that's about as good as it's going to get.

My buddy just got an absolute steal from Amazon that it looks like I missed out on. $650 for a 7900 XTX, yes an XTX
His order has shipped and mine is still stuck in fulfillment

This was on Tuesday and it went right back to retail price after we ordered
It looks like they may have accidentally done 35% off instead of a $35 coupon

Haha yeah, it happens. Unless his has shipped, don’t be surprised if they cancel the order. Happened to me on a RAM kit. They spent a week trying to get me to cancel on my end before just taking the Amazon strike and cancelling on theirs.

His did ship, mine has not
He also lives next to a microcenter and picked up that sweet bitspower deal for the full custom loop case and AM5 mobo.
Why do we have to live 4+ hours away from one

Lucky.
I would change my strict rule of never going to Baton Rouge if there was a Microcenter there.

Landed a 4080 Super at retail today. Was trying to nab a 4090 but have never been able to get one at retail. This will hold me over until 5090
It'll be running with my 9900K LOL (until I can secure a 7800X3D on sale), but it wont matter much since I'm running 4K

As someone who just had to go down to an old Gen from 12900k for two days, it was miserable.
But PUBG is a steaming pile of shite so it can't run on anything

Define on sale. They are sub 400 these days.

I think they were down to around $330 a few months ago.
