So for those playing the home game, the 4080S is basically 2% faster than the original 4080. It’s essentially on par to the 7900xtx in pure raster, much better in RT, and a bit better power efficiency. I would expect to see the price of the 7900xtx drop to somewhere between $850-$900 in response to this release.
In conclusion: 4080S is boring, the 7900xtx is boring, and this whole generation sucks

I saw Tech Jesus call it lame and cited the 1%-3% increase over the 4080. Said the only thing cool is its cheaper. Then "ended" his review video after like 45s. But he came back after the intro and showed the benchmarking an stuff.
Its a damn shame that they will sell a ton of these and feel like incremental increases will get people to buy. "For that reason, I'm out." Mark Cuban, SaintEB.

He said something to the tune of certain games will use the vcache incorrectly, causing the game to....well shite, I don't really understand. Was wondering your thoughts on this as you seem to be an AMD guy.

This wasn’t even really an incremental increase, as 2% is damned near statistical noise; this was a $200 price reduction that they refused to call a $200 price reduction. Just corporate silliness. The stupid thing is that if they had just announced a $200 price drop on the 4080, I think it would have been received better. Still not worth $1k, but I don’t think people would be mocking it the way they are now.

I’m not in a position to load the video right now, but if it’s the one I’m thinking of, it’s less that he’s shitting on the x3D in general and more than he’s shitting on the… 7950?x3D he had in his system because the chip/Windows/programs/whatever don’t handle the hand off well between the 8 cores with the extra cache and the 8 cores that don’t. The system makes a ton of mistakes, and he got tired of micromanaging it.
Unless this is a brand new video that says something different, I don’t think he has any issue with the single die chips (everything below the X900) with 3D vcache.
Eta: to clarify the issue with the handoff, his chip only had the extra vcache on half of the cores. Some games were using the die (with half the cores) without the extra vcache, therefore defeating the purpose of having the extra vcache to begin with. Other tasks that don’t care about vcache and would do better with higher clock speeds would prioritize the slower die with the extra vcache, etc, etc.
Eta2: So a chip like the 7800x3D with only one die wouldn’t have the same problem, as every core has access to the extra vcache.

Its is not new. You are correct, its the 7950 one, because I do recall him saying about the split core issue.

I guess this isn't the case, but I thought I read somewhere that the 3d vcache on the 7950x3d was split, allowing it to be split between cores (say 8/8).

The 7950x3D has two processor dies with 8 cores on each die. While each die has vcache, the extra 3D vcache is only on one of the die. So one die with 8 cores has access to the normal amount of vcache while another die with 8 cores has access to the normal vcache plus the extra 3D cache.

So only one die has 3d vcache. Got it. You kinda have me nerding out on this stuff now. lol.
ETA: It may not be possible, but would AMD consider adding 3d vcache to both die in the future?

Their position was that because current games generally don’t even use 8 cores, adding the 3D vcache to the second die was both an unnecessary cost increase as well as a reduction in performance of that second die.
I think they expected the hand off logic to work better than it does, and in hindsight, I wonder if they regret that decision. They basically have three options: significantly improve the hand off logic, include the vcache on both dies, or simply stop selling the x3D above the X800 chips. Only time will tell which they choose.

Same issue but worse. Only one die has the extra vcache, and each die has six cores. So where both the 7800x3D and 7950x3D have a die with extra vcache and eight cores, the 7900x3D has one six core die with extra vcache.

All the last two years has reinforced is that I made a great decision going with my 5800x3d/3080FE build and I still can’t believe Josh and I were able to procure the 3080 in the fashion we did

I miss the days when a new generation of gpus would be a definate upgrade. The new midrange would match the old high end and the new high end would be far beyond the old one. Isn't that how it used to be? What happened? I feel like I'm going to have to wait multiple generations to justify and upgrade.

So, it still does, to an extent. Traditionally, the XX70 matches the previous XX90. The problem is that the “mid range” now costs $800.

Man I feel the exact opposite, so glad I made the jump and got familiar with DDR5 and AM5 across the board. Was so much new shite to learn but damn it was fun. Still the top 7700X/4070 score in the world.
Even more so now with Zen 5 starting to get closer and closer, I'll preorder and plop that 8700X in nice and quick and probably make back most of my money re-selling the 7700X.
