Microsoft wants in-game ads triggered by boss fights, loading screens, & cut scenes

Watching an ad would earn players another block of ad-free play time, called a "credit"
Microsoft has filed a patent application for a system that would place ads in PC and console games during breaks the game itself identifies. Instead of interrupting play on a fixed schedule, the system would use game data to find a natural break, such as after a boss fight or while a new level loads.
The filing points to a possible ad-supported model for PC and console games that is less disruptive than the approaches commonly used in mobile titles.
The application, published as US 2026/0260258 A1 and titled "Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access," describes a way to support free-to-play games without inserting ads at random points in a session.
Under the proposed system, players would receive an initial period of ad-free access. That could be a set amount of time, such as 30 minutes, or an allowance tied to game progress, such as completing a full level. As that period nears its end, the system would wait for the game to reach a suitable pause point. The patent identifies examples including the end of a boss fight, a completed quest, the end of a cutscene and a loading screen.
The game would send an event to a content-management system when one of those moments occurs. The system could then pause the player's interaction, display video or static promotional material, and resume the game after the ad has run. Viewing the ad would give the player another block of uninterrupted access. The patent calls that block a credit, which would delay the next gameplay suspension.
The key element is the use of game-state data. Instead of relying on a timer alone, the proposed system would use game-engine information to determine when an ad can run with less chance of interrupting active play. That would require a game to provide signals about events such as level completion, checkpoints, menus, transitions and other points when the player is not actively engaged in an important task. The advertising platform could use those signals, along with the player's remaining credit, to decide whether to show promoted content.
The filing does not identify a specific Microsoft game, Xbox service or product plan. A patent application also does not mean the technology will be commercialized. It does, however, show one way Microsoft is considering ad-supported access for interactive software. Advertising is already common in mobile games, where ads often run between levels or after failed attempts. Applying a similar model to PC and console games is more complicated because game sessions can be longer and less structured. A fixed-timer interruption could cut into combat, dialogue or another important part of a game.
Microsoft's proposed approach would try to avoid that by tying ad delivery to in-game events. The result would be a system in which a player earns more play time by viewing an ad at a moment chosen by the game's own state.

No need to worry about actually owning your games when they're going to eventually try to push bullshite "free" to play ad stuffed garbage on us.

I’m trying to imagine my disgust if I had been hit with an ad immediately after beating Manus or the Valkyrie Queen for the first time

I wonder what would make this patent different from what is already done with mobile games. Seems like this would be something someone already holds the patent for.
This seems to go along with the free ads-based cloud streaming they were testing with Insiders in July. I guess we'll have to wait and see how they roll it out, but this is a model that seems to work very well for free to play mobile games so it makes sense that they would try to adapt it to the Game Pass ecosystem, especially if we're talking about a new "free" tier that they appear to be testing out.

Excellent work beating that boss, player. Now lets hear a word from our friends over at Raid: Shadow Legends.

Man I have defended and bought Xbox for 20 years but the last two months they have pushed me away. Unless something drastic changes I may go PlayStation next gen

I would refuse to buy any game that does that, no matter how good it is.
It could be the greatest game ever created and I would avoid it.
Dealbreaker.

I wouldn't panic just yet, these companies file patents for goofy shite all the time that never end up being implemented.

This is just a patent. You should wait till they actually announce something they're doing with it before jumping off the deep end. This is almost certainly for a free or low-price tier of Game Pass.

Can't wait to see Pfizer stimpacks in Fallout 5 and Master Chief chugging Mountain Dew and eating Slim Jims in the next Halo.

You joke, but I honestly don't understand why more games don't do this.
Like the Monster Energy drinks in Death Stranding. Seems like an easy thing to do without being "in your face."

Depending on the context of the game, it makes sense. Like KFC and Pizza Hut in Crazy Taxi or Burger King in NFS Underground 2. You are driving around a city, it makes sense that you would see those locations instead of a generic knock off.
This new Microsoft thing sounds like a hellscape.

Right. Wouldn't be out of place at all. Honestly I think it's more immersion-breaking sometimes for all of the ads to be parodies of real companies.

For sure. If they're adding ads to my Game Pass Ultimate sub, I'll be pissed. If it's being added to the lowest-level sub or to the free tier they've been testing for free cloud-based streaming, that makes sense to me and I see no problem with it.

Hot take considering streaming services are now pushing ads on their most premium tiers.
Disney +

I think they had to add that language because they offer live TV events sometimes, and those events have ads. Like it or not, we live in a world where someone would definitely have sued them because they saw an ad while watching live TV on the app.
ETA: In fact, the article you linked even says as much:
quote:
The most important thing for subscribers is understanding what Disney is and is not saying.
Disney has not announced that normal on-demand movies and series on Premium will suddenly pause for repeated mid-roll commercials.
Instead, the updated rules focus on areas where advertising can still appear.
That includes promotional material before or after a program, sponsorship messages, live and as-live content, channels, special events, and certain third-party programming.

I think they added it so they can show ads to everyone, even those in the premium tier. The mobile model will take over the AAA market unless there is a hard pushback from the market.

Nope, and as I pointed out in my post edit, the article that guy linked even says exactly what I said.
ETA: Essentially, they updated their terms to be in line with what they're already doing on the top-tier plans. Their lawyers noticed a hole in their wording, so they fixed it.
