Maybe I am getting too old for gaming

The last two years there are have only been a handful of games I looked forward to and liked. It used to be that there were three to four a year I waited for to come out.
I have played my favorites games/series too much to play again.
Mass Effect (not Andromeda)
Tomb Raider
HZD
God Of War
Metro
Fallout
Elder Scrolls
Witcher
Dragon Age
Just Cause
Far Cry (not so much the last two)
Assassins Creed (not a huge fan but they are falling off more)
Bioshock
Saints Row

it's not you. it's the industry.

Have you played any Fromsoft?
Give Demons Souls or Dark Souls 1 a try.
Or just start with Elden Ring as it’s the most accessible.

I did not see GTA or Red Dead Redemption on that list. Those should occupy some time until Elder Scrolls VI.

The quality of games has dropped dramatically. I remember in the SNES and N64 era being able to buy most games and they would be pretty good.
It's not an age thing either. I notice kids like my younger cousins are much more critical of games these days than I remember when I was their age.
That said, there are many good games out there. I think the age of the AAA developer is dead.

I'm surprised it took this long for this thread.

It’s sad. Then you have Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring being released within a week.

While I’m sympathetic in the sense that we like a lot of the same games, you need to branch out. Try some strategy games like Age of Empires, Civilization, or Crusader Kings. Platformers like Ori, Cup Head, or Hollow Knight. Play some more off the wall titles like Disco Elysium and Nier:Automata. Try some puzzlers like Portal or Limbo. Relax with Stardew Valley. And if you want to scratch the nostalgia itch, go straight Indies for a while.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Dozens more out there that can scratch the itch, if you’re willing to branch out from RPGs, shooters, and RPG shooters. I’ve been gaming a very long time, and I think the argument that modern gaming is worse than gaming in the past holds little to no water.

You need to start playing games that predate your list. Most of those things aren’t even that old.

I'll admit I do kind of miss his weekly key binding rage threads.

The obviously drunken weekend rage posts were always good for a laugh.

Games aren’t supposed to be fun bro
They’re only there to distract you from the fact that you go to the wage cage and pick taxes for 12 hours a day and then go home and have like 2 hours for yourself before you have to sleep and go back
Back in the day you’d go do fun rewarding work at the factory or coal mine for 8 hours and then go get drunk with your boys at the bowling alley before driving your muscle car home to your 5 bedroom house that cost 20k and your not fat wife. And then boomers voted for nafta and ruined it
So yeah just drink your corn syrup and play your vidya and take your ssris millenial

quote:I agree with this overall. Among the friends that game, there is a group that constantly complains about the current state of games/game industry, but they never branch out really. They stay inside the same 2, maybe 3, genres and don't branch out.

I picked up fighting games as a regular genre I play over a year ago, and it has been an excellent addition that I rarely see others try.

I'll echo this. The industry has definitely changed for the worse, but there are still plenty of gems. You have look harder and play types of games you normally don't to find them.

If you have a PS5 or PC checkout Ghostwire: Tokyo. Started it last night and it’s a breath of fresh air for me.

I think this is nostalgia talking. Don't get me wrong, I think the industry is in really bad shape, and I have had a huge drop in enthusiasm for the gaming world lately, but the older consoles had a lot of garbage on them, too.
I prefer old games and still have all the old console hardware hooked up to my TV, with Everdrive cartridges with SD cards of full sets of ROMs on them. I sometimes have friends over and we go through it picking random games -- most games are third-rate clones of more popular, well-known games, or they just suck.
The difference in our perception is not age, it's the changing times. In my experience growing up back then, we just didn't have as much room to be that critical, because there really weren't many other entertainment options. Those games didn't need to compete against the web, youtube, twitch, movie streaming, free to play online games, texting friends, etc. etc. for our attention. We else were we going to do, ride bikes? Watch Aladdin on VHS for the 20th time? Nah, we'll give that Mario platformer ripoff with terrible controls and collision detection another try, and hey, maybe we'll warm up to it.

I've gotten just as much enjoyment playing Farming Simulator than any other game in the last 8+ years.
My cattle farm is starting to pop off.

This.
Games are now coming out unfinished and/or with paywalls for content that would've been included in games years ago. Games that we wait years for after a great reveal come out sucking like Cyberpunk, Anthem, Battlefield, etc.
Games like Halo aren't playable for hours on end like they used to be because they're supposed to be live service games, yet they take months between content drops.
I've resorted to getting an hour or so in on shooters and then moving to older games like a modded out Skyrim/Fallout

Revisit Cyberpunk. It’s very good now.
But this is a great example of why people feel like there’s nothing to play. People get sucked up in the negativity.
