Persona 5 is a fantastic game. Also if you’ve played FF7, but not 8, 9, or 10, you should try them out (FF9 especially). All 3 are top notch JRPGs

Loved Lost Odyssey. Easily the best Xbox jrpg ever. I actually never finished it though, started 2 playthroughs in college and got caught up in life both times

One of my favorite parts are these little cutscene extras you get over time that go over parts of their lives.

Some of the best characters in any game.

The opposite of FF13’s characters. Even the child characters in Lost Odyssey are exceptionally well-crafted.

Yep all Kaim’s memories from his long life, if I remember right he was cursed to live forever or something? It would be tempting to skip them because there’s alot but you’d be doing yourself a disservice

He is an immortal stuck in a world of mortals.

It adds a great element to the story.

FF9 is my favorite FF. A bit linear (like 10 in parts), but I love the characters and story.

I like the world of FF8, but the story is hilariously bad. The best part of 8 is seeing how stupidly OP you can get by grinding the card game and running from battles.

FF7Remake

It's been a long time since i played the original FF7, but it wasn't the original turn based, and now the remake doesn't look turn based. Am i wrong?

If you want an easier way to sleepwalk through 8, just junction your strongest magic to Squall’s attack, keep him at critical and spam his limit break every turn (keep hitting circle and it will eventually appear as his attack option). Your other party members are only there to keep him barely alive. You will blow through every battle, no matter what level you’re at.

Is FF7Remake a true JRPG, I’ve read it’s more of an action combat style now.

How would action combat make it not a true JRPG??

Check out Chained Echoes. It's being praised as one of the best retro-inspired RPGs in years. It's also available on just about every console; Xbox, ps5, switch, and PC.

It's currently free on Game Pass.

Very good suggestion. I downloaded it this weekend to try it out and I've been having a blast.

I also recommend Chained Echoes. Fantastic game. If you love SNES/PS1 pixel rpg games, this game is built inspired heavily based on those games. Even has an intro area that is a total homage to the fair at the start of Chrono Trigger. It wears its influences on it's sleeve and has no shame doing it - and is better for it. It's fairly lengthy if you are a trying to 100% the game. The storyline is interesting and has some good plot twists. It makes for a very memorable story when you start finding out your characters true stories and the reasons they are who they are. Very cool concept story wise. Gameplay is pretty damn fun too. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys rpgs in general - it's free on GamePass as already stated.

I did not like this game at all. It's certainly not a game I would recommend to anyone new to JRPGs.

It's a game made by people who have put 1000s of hours into JRPGs made for people who have already put 1000s of hours into JRPGs.

Will probably second this. One of the best indies I've seen emulate the feel of SNES/PS1 RPGs without feeling cheap or a bad imitation.

But maybe not for people new to the genre. More for fans of older JRPGs.

When you say JRPG, are you saying you want an actual Japanese Role Playing Game, or more specifically one that fits that style?

Games that fit that style that I personally enjoy:

Shadowrun Returns
Shadowrun Hong Kong
Shadowrun Dragonfall
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

IF you're really wanting a blast from the past, the old school Final Fantasy games have been ported to PC and are available on Steam. Just remember they use the Japanese numbering scheme (we skipped a few ports, which is why FF has a 1, 2, 3 then 7 here in the US - FF 2 was actually FF 4, and FF 3 was actually FF 6. FF 2, 3, and 5 in Japan were not originally made available in the US).

Gamer confession: I've become a voice acting snob in video games. I'd love to be able to get into the Chained Echos throwback style RPGs that have been coming out over the last 5-10 years, but I don't know if I can get through no voice anymore. I'm missing out, I know

I'll have to disagree because I rarely play JRPGs and very much enjoyed it.
