Obviously it’s FFXIV 1.0
Coming in second, in my opinion, is Rift.
What is yours?

Good answers so far. MapleStory 2 probably fits this too. The original still has a healthy playerbase though

2.0 was really good

Probably the Matrix Online :D
Considering the license though, I would have to say Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game launched some technical issues caused by the awful, unfished game engine, but it was a solid enough foundation to build upon.
Anemic content since launch with full on paid "expansions" that are on par with live update from FFXIV.
EA just used it as a cash cow, exploiting the cartel market whales until that ran dry and they pawned it off to Broadsword.

Elder Scrolls Online was pretty rough the first go around.

The Day Before. Lasted maybe a week and turned out to be more of an extraction shooter than MMO as advertised.

Favorite MMO ever before the combat upgrade or whatever it was called.
WOW killed that game sadly.

New World and Star Wars Galaxies were the first two which came to mind.

NGE - New Game Experience. Sad day.

Warhammer Online.
So much potential.
I think a ton of people had trouble running the game in the large scale pvp battles

This is the one that I was thinking. It was hyped to take over competitive raiding and it lasted what, 2 or 3 years?

I dual boxed a TKA / master ranger and a master rifleman / master ranger. Needed a million units of avian meat? Give me a couple of hours.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.
Brad McQuaid had some big ideas to follow up on his success with EQ (I was especially interested in seeing how the Diplomacy skill would work), but it never seemed to take off and was released when the market was over-saturated with MMOs.
