i beat 1 when it first came out and liked it but thought it was repetitive. got halfway through 2 and got bored. ive always wanted to play the newer ones but im weird about having to start a series from the beginning so i can fully understand the story and that would take forever

I have that same hangup. It's the sole reason why I haven't done the Xenosaga series.

I will say that I don't think it's as critical with the Assassin's Creed series. They're designed to not alienate new players. You can jump in at any point and be more or less okay because the overall narrative is relatively loose.

Basically all you need to know is government that leans too far left or right (read: Templars) = bad, but libertarianism (read = Assassins) = good and that this struggle has been reiterated for thousands of years. I've found that most of the stuff regarding the precursors is relatively self-contained for each flagship title. If you play the spin-offs from a flagship title, playing the original title from that first makes sense, but it's not necessary for me to play Assassin's Creed II to understand the overall narrative of Odyssey, for instance.

I wouldn’t say that. The British empire or Italian nobles didn’t fall on extreme spectrum yet some of them were Templars. The Templars are pretty much like the Illuminati. The Assassins are the anti-thesis to that.

Fair, I suppose you could add in the element of sweeping power. That pretty much nails imperialist Britain and the economic juggernaut that was the Italian city-states of 1400s/1500s.

Great franchise.

Black Flags is amazing. I spend Hours just sailing around pirating ships.

I’ll be honest though, I like The framework story as a vehicle for the flashbacks but I dont Care about what’s actually happening.

Same. I know one of the criticisms of Odyssey was the lack of focus on the tradition Assassin's Creed backstory but that didn't both me one bit.

AC Unity is just okay (and gets boring toward the end), but I'd say all the rest of them are really good games.

The historical aspect of them ropes me in, and my wife and I really enjoy the accuracy of the game worlds. She has a fine arts degree with a minor in Art History, so she really appreciates that they clearly put a ton of effort into being as historically accurate as possible with the art and other things they put in the games.

I remember reading about how the dev team meticulously recreated Notre Dam in AC Unity. Unity wasnt a good as Black Flag (which is really a masterpiece I think) but their attention to historic detail really struck a note with me. Especially seeing as how Notre Dame will never be the same since the fire, the only way I can see it in its original glory is either through old photos or this game which is astonishing.

I've just started playing them. These are awesome but the good news is that I get a good long run of playing them all now.
wait until you get to Unity.

They are hit or miss. and with they hit or miss....they really hit... or miss. 3, Black flag, and Origins are great. Still havent played odyssey might get it before Valhalla and let the price drop.

Unity wasn't bad. It had a lot of issues at release that killed it for a lot of people.

I'm not saying it's really good...it's probably one of my least favorite in the series with 3 being the bottom for me. They rebounded well with Syndicate and took it to another level Origins and Odyssey.

Can't wait for Valhalla but will probably hold off until I get a PS5 and I'm not sure how easy that will be to grab.

Odyssey is on sale on Xbox. Is it any good? Haven't played any AC since Revelations.

I thought it was fantastic. One of very few games in the current gen that I sank 100+ hours into.

I hadn't played an AC since Brotherhood prior to Odyssey.

Was prolly at 70 my first run though.

Second run with Kassandra, over 100hours put in.

Most time I’ve ever put into an AC title. Definitely worth it.
