Are we in an age that it’s socially acceptable to play video games into retirement?

I have a group that I play with and a few other friends that are in the 30-40-50 range. My uncle used to play computer games a lot growing up and he has to be 65 ish not really sure if he’s still playing though.

I dont think your mind really cares how old you are. Do people stop reading at a certain age? You always need brain stimulating activities.

That’s what I think but it seems there are a lot of people that don’t have any interest or look down on it.

I use it to unwind and eat time up when I’m bored.

Also get to hang out with friends across the country

There's no "too old" people who are older think video games are for children most likely grew up when video games were still arcade style with limited variety and no real emotional connection to anything other than getting high score.

The way I look at video games now is the same as watching TV just more interactive. The stories, connection to characters, all the advancements in tech, and not to mention the relationships you build with other players online and the real world skills and connections that come with that have turned video games into something completely different than what they were. The idea that there's an age where you're too old is outdated.

Death. There's nothing wrong with anyone at any age playing video games.

I have buddies that think playing video games after college is weird but they will wake their asses up at 4 am and go sit in a tree for 5 hours.

We're at an age on why the hell do you care if someone judges you for that.

I’m old. Don’t particularly enjoy gaming anymore. Used to.

I have the last gen. Systems because my son doesn’t call home often enough for me but he will play me online a couple times a week. I suck, by the way, but we can connect through him kicking my butt online. We talk smack during the game and I’ll sneak in a question about how school is going or how he is eating—parent stuff. It’s one of the reasons why I’m trying to get 2 PS5s. Can’t seem to get the 1st one though :(

This is an argument I've made many times. I've sworn off MMOs at this point in my life because they are simply too large of a time investment, but there have been single player games, and even individual missions/quests, that have had as much or more of an impact on me than any movie I've ever watched. Anyone in 2021 saying that "video games are for children" has absolutely no idea what they're talking about.

That's genuinely awesome, man. Seriously.

Speaking as someone in their mid-30's, I think parents underestimate how much of a drain it is to talk about our lives. You're not asking me what new thing I learned in school anymore; I go to work, pay my bills, spend time with friends when I can. And I don't really want to talk to you about any of that, not because I actively don't want you to know, but because it's draining for me to recount all of that crap during what is supposed to be the time I'm recharging.

But if you treat us like you would your friends when it comes to topics of conversation: books, movies, games, concerts, sports, hobbies, recent newsworthy events, etc, etc, then we won't mind sprinkling in things about what's going on in our lives. We just don't want to be an info dump when we talk.

So in short, again, that's awesome that you're doing that. It will pay dividends long term

Everything in moderation. As long as it isn’t taking away from your adult responsibilities I think it’s a good way to unwind and enjoy creative games. Interesting, creative games are a form of art themselves.

10 years ago I played EvE with an 80+ year old multi millionaire. He had a single digit MS employee number. Lost touch when he married a 30 something Chinese gal while undergoing cancer treatment and was splitting time between Seattle area and mainland China trying to get a sporting goods/outdoor gear factory going in China. RIP Ray!

How socially acceptable video games are can vary depending on context, but the good thing is that you don't have to care.

Sometimes when I think I might be in danger of growing out of them, I realize that it's just because nothing has come along in a while that's really captivated me. But something always does eventually.

When I was a teenager, my father was opposed to video games. But I eventually managed to get him interested in some of the story-based and strategy ones.
