How does the Xbox series S stand up to the PS5? I see I can get one for $250 at best buy

Seems like a steal but is it just not a good console or something?

I hear nothing but negatives about the S model. Probably depends what you will play with it but resource heavy games seem to struggle.

Just realized that isn't the latest and greatest model. Looks like they changed the design and almost fooled me

sounds like you are comparing a series S to a one s..

ETA: I have never compared, so I Assumed (yes) that the discless was the closer competitor...Not sure the rest of the hate, the Series S and the One S confuse a good bit of people and it sounds like OP is one

PS5 digital would compare to a Series S as a Series X would compare to the disc PS5

That's not true. The only difference between a digital PS5 and a disc PS5 is the disc drive. However, there are a bunch of differences between a Series S and a Series X. Finch beat me to it, but you can take a look at the graphic in his post.

Not even close. Can hardly call the XSS a next gen machine. Barely above an Xbox One X

Digital only and shoots for 1440p instead of 4k but a Series S + Game Pass is a pretty, pretty good combo.
Small pet peeve is that it's white instead of black.

the naming scheme for xbox systems is horrible, its easy to get them mixed up.

i cant tell you how they compare though. i have a ps5 and love it, anything that goes to xbox i just play on PC

If you are just looking to get your feet wet into this gen of gaming, something to play on for a year or two and try out Gamepass, then its not a terrible purchase. Games wont be in 4K and may run at slower FPS but you wont have an awful experience. Its also backwards compatible with last gen games so if you missed out last gen there is ton of cheap games on the XBox Store. You'll probably want to upgrade sooner than later though.

The S is about equal to the PS4 Pro in terms of power.

I wouldn’t get it unless you’re a super casual gamer and only play sports/call of duty type games. I feel like it’s gonna be obsolete a lot quicker than a ps5 or the series X

A hell of an emulation machine, but I would not buy a Series S for next gen gaming unless it was my only option.

I'd agree with this. My daughter has a Series S and perfect for the games she likes to play such as Minecraft, Slime Rancher, etc. Doesn't really tax the system and she's playing in 1080p anyways.

The Series X I have in the living room is pretty close to my gaming PC rig in terms of visual fidelity on a 4K HDR TV and performance. It can actually keep the framerate up as compared to the Series S.

The PS5 is going to be much closer to the Series X in terms of performance.
