Happens to most of them. They get so big that can't help but ask "what can we get away with" instead of "what should we do?" Bioware, Blizzard, Ubisoft, Creative Assembly.

Games are likely to follow Mario Kart World and GTA 6's lead with an $80 base price tag, according to several analysts, but only the biggest of games will be able to pull it off unscathed.
Like Mario Kart World before it, GTA 6's price has raised big question marks over the heads of anyone worried about higher video game costs. Will $80 become the new standard? Not exactly, say some analysts we talked to, but they will become much more common in the months and years following GTA 6's November release date.
DFC Intelligence's David Cole explains to GamesRadar+ that "the industry has already been moving to this price point, led by Nintendo," a publisher that launches games with all sorts of price tags attached. "The issue is there are only a handful of premium games that command this price point."
quote:
Essentially, not every game will have the easiest time launching at $80. Grand Theft Auto and Super Mario can because they're, well, Grand Theft Auto and Super Mario. Cole adds that Rockstar Games is continuing a precedent "for only the most in-demand games with a built-in initial audience... It is the industry going towards a tiered pricing model where it is recognized that some games simply provide much more value than others and should be priced accordingly."
Joost van Dreunen echoes the point, saying the new $80 standard will be "reserved for only a select few titles and franchises" that can command it, and publishers that try to charge $80 on games that don't deliver "will likely come to regret that."

GTA is launching at $100 base price. The $80 version isn't the full game.

$80 is the standard game. $100 gives you extra shops, clothing, vehicles.

"Base price" does not and has never meant "unlocks the full game." It means base game without extras.

100% chance the industry is viewing it the way I stated it.

No, it's more like buying a car and having the car stop you from going to certain places unless you pay an additional fee. This is obviously hypothetical.
I don't think anyone has a problem with Rockstar selling additional clothing, skins, weapons, cars, etc.
But they are removing missions from the story throughout the game chapters. Essentially the $80 game is crippleware.
It is absolutely a different game with the $80 versus the $100 version.

this is what i've found regarding the two editions... none of it looks story driven.

I'm pretty sure I've read there will be additional missions and side quests that appear throughout the game chapters during gameplay.
Having buildings and locations behind a paywall is not cool either.
For as long as it took to make the game, $80-100 is worth it in my opinion so I don't see the need to cripple the base version.
If they want to charge more, then make the disc version an extra fee.

They are putting some vague undisclosed missions behind the $100 game but we have no reason to expect these to be mainline story missions that fundamentally alter the experience or story
These missions are more likely to be like the gang missions in RDR2 that were only available to that games Ultimate Edition

Yes, it locks you out of the ability to raid a gang compound, which absolutely is a mission. Maybe not a "story mission," but that argument would be splitting hairs. There's no way to know if that is story related or will affect the story at this time. All we know is it's locking off at least one mission. LINK
quote:
But there’s another Ultimate Edition bonus that may be more of a concern to fans of the campaign, and the first solid point towards what some of GTA 6’s missions may look like. We can all assume and infer from the two previous trailers that we’ll be getting involved in the standard Grand Theft Auto mix of car chases, gun fights, and bank robberies, but now it seems as if Gang Compounds are being added to the mix. It suggests a harkening back to the 3D era of the series, such as Vice City and San Andreas, where gangs played a huge part in the stories, and taking over properties and areas of their maps served as key mechanics. But Standard Edition players seemingly won’t get to access one of these missions, suggesting they may well be more like side activities, rather than playing a crucial role in the plot.
The exclusive infiltration features “one of Leonida’s loudest and most socially active gangs, the PTT Youngin$” as Ultimate Edition players will be tasked with finding “a way to raid the PTT Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store in Southside Vice City and escape safely to score some special items and distinct contraband.” Whereas I fully expected GTA 6 to launch with cosmetics that only some could get their hands on, I have to say I’m a little surprised to see gameplay content locked behind a certain edition.

This guy is using words like “absolutely” when we haven’t even seen true gameplay footage yet. Grown men being this soft over $20 for a product that could generate 1000 hours of entertainment is so confounding to me

It's an accurate identifier, but thanks for admitting we've seen no gameplay.

$100, and my issue with it is they are asking us to pre-purchase this without seeing any gameplay and without releasing a physical version. I'm just not going to pretend they aren't locking missions behind a paywall. They absolutely are doing that.
