FO4 is a fine game. one of my favorites.

I went overboard with settlement building. its really in depth and rewarding when done right

even ignoring that aspect, exploring Boston was really cool and the environment is well done

One of the first weapons I ever got was an explosive shell shotgun. Insanely OP so I just walked through the game.

Found one of those too. Pipe shotgun so only one shot at a time but that thing would drop a deathclaw in only a couple hits

4 is good, but the DLC was weak in comparison to previous entries.

Mods are great, go for them.

If you like building, it has an element other games did not - so it has that going for it. Also your protagonist is voiced, unlike before. The main story is good, some of the side ones are good, but New Vegas has the better overall stories and such, so it will feel weaker than that.

Think of a lighter, prettier New Vegas.

Bumping with an update. I got it a couple days ago and booted it up about 2 hours ago.

I really like the combat, and the story seems interesting so far, but I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with this settlement I started with the first minuteman group. I built beds and water pumps but I'm lost on how the building system works. It looks like I can make a whole building, but I'm not sure.

Also can't find any food to grow; do I just need to explore and find some?

Finally, I have a load of useless shite in my inventory that I'd like to be able to sell, and I haven't found a merchant anywhere.

You'll find it either in the wild or another friendly settlement. Just pick some and plant in your place.

Either with traders you come across or just streamline the main story until you get to Diamond City.

Save your useless junk in your workbench so you can use it for building. Sell weapons and armor you don't want. Might want to save crappy leather armor as you will need lots of leather for almost any armor mods you make. You can also give guns to settlers to use in case of attack. They only need one round of that ammo type to use the weapon.

Once you have the right perks you can build shops in your settlements and sell to them so you don't have to go one of the cities.

Yeah, by useless junk I meant things like crappy guns and armor.

The other stuff stays in the work bench. I think I'm getting the hang of it.

I believe you can store guns and armor in the workbench too. If the settlement gets attacked, your settlers will find a better weapon as long as they have the ammo for it.

I've seen that on youtube videos, but if I'm wrong someone can correct me

Bump again.

There's a huge learning curve to this, but I think I've more or less got it figured out.

Man this is a good game. Thanks for convincing me to check it out, and for the advice!

ALWAYS take the batteries out of your power armor when done using it, or someone else will put it on and walk off with it.

Does FO3 get better? I'm the guy saying I just don't get the hype. I wanted to like this game so much being a Skyrim fanatic. In many ways it's the same game with a different setting, but I feel like there's a lot of flaws. Not a fan of the coloring or graphics quite honestly. It's a very green game with jagged graphics. I find the voice acting cheesey, almost kiddy. People like Moira and that sheriff that town right outside The Vault. I don't know. I find the game dated, and I think I just missed FO3 when it was relevant. I've been considering getting FO4 considering it's more modern, but not left with a great taste from FO3. I may try to give it one more go and adjust some brightness settings (I found the game very dark and almost depressing with how "green" I found it lol).

I recently installed FO4, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet because it's a Bethesda game, which means the real/only way to enjoy it is to first mod the shite out of it & I'm too lazy to go through that.

4 is a whole lot more like skyrim than fallout 3.

I personally enjoyed fallout 3 more than 4 but if you were a skyrim junky, you'd likely have the opposite opinion.

I enjoyed the hell out of settlement building. It did take a few mods to make it more enjoyable. Especially the mod that allows you to scrap just about everything in the settlement so you can rebuild from a clean slate.

My main beef with the game is all of the factions suck. Each faction is basically a dick to all the other factions. So you have to pick sides and none were compelling enough to be able to sway me 100% to their side.

Back to settlements, they really needed to do a better job with settlement attacks. I could have freaking defense at insanely high levels and yet if I didn't make it back for the attack the settlement was wrecked.

Oh.....radiant minutemen quests suck...

Those are actually fairly minor beefs. I played all the way through twice and maxed everything both times.

There are usually three spawn points where enemies come from in settlement attacks. Once you find all those you can just defend those spots.

Your defense needs to equal your number of settlers for max happiness but around 150 will be enough to win without you having to go back everytime. You could also arm your settlers with good guns and leave some extra power armor for them.

Just got sucked back in. Love this game.

Decided to give Far Harbor a rest for a bit and returned to the Commonwealth and started wandering around. I have over 100 hours in the game but I'm blown away at how much I still haven't discovered. Picked up a "Separated Family" broadcast and started investigating that. So much of these stories just tear me up, a family with two boys, one of them 5, get separated from the mom as the bombs started to fall. They are in a bunker and have no idea if mom is alive or not, 5 year old asking when mama is going to come home, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
