One player of the long-running online game EVE Online experienced that horror Sunday, when an ambush destroyed his supercarrier valued at a whopping $9,000.

quote:

The ambush played out with plenty of intrigue. Players in the Pandemic Legion received an SOS and assumed it was a player in distress. It turns out the player they had put in charge of leading their fleet was actually a spy for an opposing group, who led them directly into a bunch of dreadnaughts and supercarriers. The owner of the Revenant, a player named TSID, could do little to stop the virtual bloodbath, and the rest is EVE Online history.

9k for an online virtual ship up in smoke. frick.

would've loved to watch the ship's owners reaction as the ambush was happening

eta: another link about it from the article LINK

quote:

Jeff: “No need to totally be super dupe mad. Everyone who lost a ship, I’m sure they feel pretty bad about it. Let’s just go play Chivalry or something. How about that.”

Graff: “Motherfricker, Jeff.”

Jeff: “Sorry, but I’m just not that mad about it. It’s kind of fricked to say and it’s wrong, but I feel kind of giddy ‘cos we just lost the most money in supers that’s ever been lost in the game forever... Don’t be mad, at least be giddy ‘cos you lost a lot of shite fricking quickly. Is that about 50 bil a minute that we lost? ‘Cos that’s really fricking good. Isn’t that nice?”

Graff: “I fricking hate you, a-hole.”

Jeff: “We should keep going and see how many titans we can lose in ten minutes, because there’s records to be broken.”

This isn't the first time the game has seen major losses. Eight months ago, a ship carrying valuable blueprints worth $6,000 in real-world money was destroyed by other players. And while losing a $9,000 spaceship is a serious bummer, the Revenant is still a far cry from the most expensive video game object, an honor held by a $350,000 space station in fellow online world Project Entropia.

They've got to gtfo. Someone exchanged $350k of IRL money for a virtual space station. Jesus H.

I guess they convert it to in game mney value and then look at how much that in game money costs on some gold selling site.

In eve you can pay in game money for subscriptions so its a little easier

quote:

Entropia Universe entered the Guinness World Records Book in both 2004 and 2008 for the most expensive virtual world objects ever sold, and in 2009, a virtual space station, a popular destination, sold for $330,000.[1] This was then eclipsed in November 2010 when Jon Jacobs sold a virtual resort on Planet Calypso for $635,000; this property was sold in chunks, with the largest sold for $335,000.[2][3]

My favorite part is right after the guy (Grath?) finishes ranting there's a couple of seconds of silence and then his teammate:

"Man, Grath. Your mic is so bad."

The economy in EVE Online is a living thing. CCP, the game's developer, actually has an economist in-house who monitors the virtual world, working to curb inflation or introducing new types of technology to absorb currency. It’s like a virtual Federal Reserve, selling bonds to shrink the money supply.

Technically, players cannot exchange ISK for real-world cash, but CCP does let them use that in-game currency to buy real-world objects (such as graphics cards) and 30-day game time codes.

This Is a joke. $9000 spaceship and then someone actually bought a space station or some shite valued at over 300k. frick man it's a virtual space station. Jesus Christ talk about depreciation. What happens if the EVE server gets hacked and wipes all that shite.

As someone who played EVE for a while, that is what every major battle looks like. It's like an excel spreadsheet attacking another spreadsheet

Even crazier is that the people who own this actually operate it like a businss and make a living doing so.

I remember reading about this a long time ago

quote:

Goteborg, Sweden - First Planet Company, developer and publisher of Planet Calypso, the oldest planet in the Massively Multiplayer Online Game Entropia Universe, announced today that the largest Asteroid Space Resort property, largely known for housing Club NEVERDIE, has been broken up into smaller portions and sold off to new investors. The total purchase price for the parcels was $635,000.00 USD giving its original owner a stunning ROI of 535% in just five years.

This same property as a whole was previously in the Guinness World Records book in 2008 as the most valuable virtual item. It was originally bought for $100,000.00 USD in 2005. Operating profitably from day one the resort recouped the $100,000.00 USD in mining/hunting rights alone in its first eight months. Due to only the virtual property and the profits obtained from mining/hunting rights and property sales, the previous owner's fortune was valued at $1 million USD in 2006. The resort continues to allow players access to amazing lands as well as a place to meet and trade.

So he has made very good money on it all these years plus he sold it for $500K more than he paid for it.
