Had some work to do today in downtown Decatur, AL -- historic city and site of the original major crossing of the Tennessee River, until rocket-town Huntsville said "hold my beer" -- and a search for nearby lunch places turned up a glorified bar/lunch counter named Simp McGhee's, noted for their "fine dining with a Cajun twist".

Trust me, I wasn't about to go anywhere near a "Cajun" restaurant in far-north Alabama, but what caught my eye was their Monday Night Special of red beans, sausage and a saled for $16.

Sixteen dollars? Wha... what???

Thus my question: what's the worst price (or place or presentation) that you have found for red beans?

I was expecting a lot worse than $16.

I wouldn’t pay that because I don’t like red beans and rice, but anything under $20 for an entree at a decent restaurant is reasonable at worst, cheap at best.

Simp McGhee's

I know the guy who runs the kitchen but have never stepped foot in that place. I purposely didn't use the term 'chef' although he would consider himself one. $16 buck for RB&R seems steep. Was it heirloom beans & rice with a heritage breed of pork? I doubt it knowing TFG.

I’m not saying it’s not higher than average for red beans. I’m just saying $16 for an entree in general isn’t bad.

get out of Boston

I agree with you that I expect to pay somewhere in that range here for a meal out. But there are plenty of places I could eat in NOLA for less than that.

Yeah I might officially be jaded.

I went out for lunch yesterday and my burger was $17. It wasn’t anything fancy, that’s just what a burger roughly costs at a restaurant here.

Dorothy’s “Poor Man Special” is one of the best deals in town — big arse plate of red beans n rice with a big sausage link and cornbread for under 5 bucks. And I guarantee it’s better than any of that nouveau, amandine, thin crust, bottled water, sauteed city food.

For a bar room in North Alabama or really anywheres thats as high as Giraffe horns.

2 lbs beans $3
Seasoning mix $1
Crisco $1
Ham Hock $3-5
3lb rice $3

So for $11-13 you can feed 8-10 people or 6-8 Cajuns.

The restaurant is there to make money. If people in Decatur are willing to pay it, good for the owner.

It is for red beans. Typically places that serve this, it is the cheapest entree on their menu unless it comes with some GIANT ham hock like Porter & Luke's or some fancy arse sausage.

That better be some mean beans for that price.

That's pretty standard for Cajun/Creole places outside of Louisiana unfortunately.

Blue Orleans in Chatty is the same way $15 for red beans
