You be the judge, did the supermarket rip me off?

Without mentioning names, a supermarket chain we visit often has a sale on wild caught Louisiana speckle trout advertised on their flyer, it read whole trout are $6.99, filets are $10.99. My wife was out running errands and asked me if I needed anything from the store for dinner. I suggested she stop by this place and get about 0ne or two pounds of the trout filets, I said I'd make fish tacos, one of her favorite things.

In the interest of full disclosure, my wife is not a great bargain hunting shopper, she has zero idea if potatoes cost $.50 a pound or $50.00 a pound, she never looks at prices, she came from a family where it wasn't important. I on the other hand can tell you how much I spent before I get to the cashier, when I grew up we frequently didn't have enough money and had to put stuff back. Unfortunately due to arthritis it is very difficult for me to go to the grocery store, and I'd rather slither on my belly than ride in an electric cart.

So at dinner I get ready to cook the trout, the package price is like $24, according to my kitchen scale I have one pound, 9 oz of somewhat mangled fillets, by their advertisement I should have paid much less. My wife said the guy at the counter said they were out of fillets, so he cleaned the whole fish (did a terrible job of it to boot).

To my way of thinking they were not out of the $10.99 fillets, when their somewhat incompetent fishmonger cleaned them they then became fillets, not whole fish, I should not have paid for all the skin, spine and head, just the $10.99 lb for the fillets. The difference was about $7 plus tax.

I rest my somewhat stinking case, was I screwed by the fish scales of justice?
