BJ’s = Better than Johnny’s

I've heard the one in LC is really bad

It’s a reaction to people claiming it’s the best pizza on the planet. If people posted that it was decent but not great, I doubt you would get much pushback.
Same applies to the Darrell’s Special

Because most posters here are pretentious wannabe foodies.

Darrell’s and Johnny’s both aren’t bad, but aren’t great either. It’s that simple.
Been to two Johnny’s in North LA. No real need to go back unless it’s between that or Pizza Hut lunch buffet.
Been to Darrell’s in Jennings. No real need to go back unless I want a sandwich that’s better than Subway, and I don’t have time to drive an extra 10 Minutes to Mermentau to get a good shrimp poboy.

So people are content with ok but not great

Way better than that greasy slop served at Fleur de lis

It’s worshipped by some and when you go and realize it’s not very good it pisses you off.

Not true. They call it BJ’s cause it sucks dick

Put your delivery of Johnny's on a pizza stone for a few minutes and it is excellent.

There’s a sonic close to the one in Alec... we’re gonna have to pay it a visit.
It actually DOES have a double meaning - the official story is that it stands for “black jacks” and there’s a card theme. But it was founded in an old Johnny’s and called better than Johnny’s.

The way I've always heard it was "BJ" was Johnny's brother-in-law at the time Johnny went bankrupt back in the 90's (expanded too far and too fast, didn't franchise). "BJ" bought the Alexandria-area locations and just renamed them (there were at least 2 I remember, the one on Jackson Extension in Alex and the one on 165 in Ball, eventually they tried expanding into West Monroe and it was moderately successful).
As far as I know the only one left is the one on Jackson Extension. Went there about a year ago and while the service was friendly the place has definitely suffered from a severe case of neglect. The pizza itself seemed to have taken a dip in quality as well (but it was the buffet so...).
As a native from the Monroe area I can definitely state there is a nostalgia factor but it's primarily because it's actually good pizza. I gauge that it's "good" by excluding my own views and relying solely on the reactions of people I've taken to it that have never had it before (co-workers, my wife's family, etc) and if they ever go have it on their own afterward. Most really enjoy it, one or two find it average and none have hated it.

I grew up close to one on Hwy 28 in Pineville. Good stuff.

It’s good but not as good as the hype... the in and out of pizza!!!

BC it's mediocre pizza at a premium price with a confusing cult like following

The one in Alexandria really needs some TLC on the interior.

I like it a lot. I work with a guy from North Louisiana and any time he gets to buy lunch for his employees, he picks Johnny's. That's loads better than the other supervisors here who usually get Domino's, Pizza Hut or Papa John's.

All of this. Where I grew up in West Monroe I could literally ride my bike to two different Johnny’s. They gave away free 8” coupons for kids with good grades, so I got one like once a month in elementary school. I could take a handful of quarters and spend a couple of hours there. They all had a game room and I’d always run into someone.
It’s where we’d go after baseball games and the smell still takes me back to the 80’s.
Anyway. I think it’s delicious. Like any place, they aren’t always winners, but it’s always going to be my favorite.
