Nor Joe's is not a bad muffaletta these days lately.
What a ringing endorsement.

Of the muffulettas I've eaten, I'd take R&O's every time.

I vote DiMartino's - the one in Algiers.

DiMartino's has some claim to the origination of the muffuletta. I think the family claims they made the original bread used in them.
I like that they also have a smaller loaf (which is excellent, BTW) so that you can get a whole sandwich that isn't too big to eat by yourself.
The store on WB Expressway is just as good as the Algiers one.

In Shreveport, it's Cush's and Fertitta's.

I HATE ANTHONY'S MUFF
Just had to put that in caps. Its pressed like a panini, the meats are not high quality, and the olive spread is mealy as shite. I just don't get why people go for it. Its some ttype of italian sandwich, but its not a good muffaletta.
In BR, its Pocarellos. And the second place is sctually Heads and Tails seafood.

I got a muff at Ryan's Thursday. It was good BUT they put mayonnaise on it. Muffs don't have mayo. Next time I'll tell them to hold the mayo.

World Deli (Casa Di Palermo)...awesome.

I've had the ones at Cochon and Fete au Fete and loved both. Fete au Fete is in Baton Rouge now on LSU campus, not sure if they are selling theirs at that location but I do think it will be at White Star Market whenever that opens

Interesting history.
As for location, it probably depends on who is on duty. For example, the muffs on Algiers are better on Friday nights than Saturday nights!

I still think the best I've had was this crappy pizza joint in Madisonville. Frog's Pizza I think it was called.

Central is the best, and interestingly, the only place I've ever had a cold muffuletta. Everyone else heats them up.

I'd never had one before and had heard that Central was the place to go. Wasn't very impressed. I've tried other variations other places that have been better, but have yet to find one that I'd consider great. I'm convinced that this is one of those foods that you have to grow up eating to enjoy it.
I will keep trying though.

Dancing Pigs Deli here in Orlando does a very credible version.
