A place in SLA that serves potatoes with roast and gravy instead of rice is usually an automatic disqualification.

I use to agree with that when I was younger, but the Silver Moon broke me of that when I was in college.

Hi Nabor on Winbourne has a good one with a lot of neck bones and oxtails.

Begerons on Jefferson has a good one albeit more updated. Not as much soul food.

I wouldn't say the best, but I used to be able to tear up some red beans and fried chicken on Mondays at Calvin's

Atcha Bakery on Nicholson for Lebanese plate lunches. Excellent food and a ton of it.

Stockyard is the GOAT, but Belou’s is pretty solid too. Atcha is goid, but not a “plate lunch”.

A “plate lunch” typically is a cafeteria-style blue collar joint that serves soul food, southern food, or just whatever tastes like something grandma used to make. They typically operate out of grocery stores and gas stations and cater to the to-go crowd, especially refinery and chem plant workers.

More in the city, Zealand Street Grocery and Bet-R both have pretty solid plate lunches most days. The Bleachers sports bar pn Chimes street recently started doing daily plate lunches. I might check it out later this week.

For the Mexican equivalent of a plate lunch, try La Morinita on Florida.
