Mine was red beans

Once I finally got ahold of some good ones around the age of 14 at a friend's house it changed me forever.

Can't ever bring myself to telling my mom how bad her red beans were.

Mine too! My parents were both good cooks but I never liked their red beans. Once I tasted my husbands red beans, I was happy!

Oh and my mom has been smoking for over 60 years so her taste buds are out of whack these days.

Nothing. Both parents were very good cooks. Dad didn't cook much but the things he did (deer, squirrel, rabbit, fish, outdoor cooking, etc) were some of the best I have had.

There were some things I didn't like (liver) but it wasn't because my mom sucked at cooking it. I still cannot stand liver except in boudin.

Lots and lots of foods.

Pretty much any vegetable. They had no clue what they were doing.

Not saying I would've liked it as a kid, but my mom, who's an awesome cook, always overcooked asparagus into a limp, olive green strand. It wasn't until years later that I realized it cooked be something crisp and good.

Same here. I hated red beans.

To this day, my parents use Louisiana mix for gumbo, red beans, jambalaya, and etouffee far more often than they make it from scratch. I honestly thought I hated "Louisiana food" as a kid.

Also steak. My dad likes his steak well done and he was the only person who ever made it. I was 21-22 years old when I realized I like steak. You can throw burgers in the mix with that, actually. They always loaded them up with eggs and breadcrumbs and cooked them for a very long time on the grill. As a kid, I couldn't articulate why I liked restaurant burgers but not home cooked burgers.

Pops is a Nam Vet. And a helluva cook. One of the best I know. During his tours overseas he spent a lot of time Japan and Taiwan. When I was growing up he would attempt to recreate some of those Asian dishes. As a kid, it was the worst food I'd ever ate. His "specialty" was Sweet and Sour chicken over some goofy looking rice thing. I despised it. My mom and sisters claimed to love it. So he cooked it sometimes 3-4 times a month. If I wanted supper it was that or the putty out of the windows. I swore off food from the continent of Asia from the time I graduated highscool until I was in my mid 20s.

My parents were generally speaking good cooks, but they had a few dishes that they made semi frequently that were poo lol

My mom made something called salmon croketts (sp?), I still cringe when I think about the smell

Brussel sprouts. Learning that they roast well with olive oil, salt, and pepper changed them for me.

Sometimes chicken. I think my mother was afraid of giving me undercooked meat so she'd over cook the hell out of on the stove top. I think Thanksgiving turkey and Sunday roasts were the only times she used meat thermometers.

pretty much all vegetables

the only way my parents cooked vegetables was boiling them to utter, flavorless mush

My mom isn't necessarily a bad cook, and I appreciate that she did it every day unlike many of my friends growing up. But she didn't start cooking more things from scratch until I was grown and it became a hobby of mine as well.

I think the explosion of the internet and food related blogs/social media played a big part as well. She is forever making good internet recipes now.

We didn't ever have red beans or white beans since my mom (a great cook) didn't like them. I can eat the hell out of them now and they are one of my favorite things to make.

Brussel Sprouts, my Maw Maw could make anything taste good except for brussel sprouts. She always served them at high holidays and I hated them. She basically boiled them and served with salt and pepper, gross.

I routinely roast them now and serve them a few times a month. If you haven't had the sprouts at Peche you need to. They fry them and toss with a peppery glaze and they are out of this world.

Roast. Honestly, I still don't like it. Dry as hell.

I probably didn't have a good steak until my mid 20's. My dad overcooked them and ordered them at shitty places double well done. LOL

Dad over cooked and over peppered steaks so much that I'd chew them and then have to excuse myself to the bathroom and spit it out. Mom cook great but I hated spinach forever. It is now my favorite
