A couple of posters already nailed it with ridiculously overdone, unseasoned steak and brussel sprouts that were improperly cooked.

Also, BBQ chicken. For the love of God chicken drums tossed plainly on a gas grill and then BBQ sauce applied as it cooked is one of the worst Dad dinners ever.

When I finally had a good steak, roasted sprouts and well-smoked chicken I had a few "oh shite!" moments.

Same story as the other posters with steak. They didn't know how to buy it, and cooked it to grey. I thought it was the worst meal one could have. I didn't learn about good medium rare ribeyes until LSU.

My mother was a fantastic cook, but what her family called gumbo, most here would call roux flavored soup. Turrible.

Creamed spinach.

Why the shite did my parents have the biggest damn chunks of onions in it!?

I mean.. yeah.. put onions in it.. but don't just quarter the damn things and think it will flake off any smaller..

This thread made me laugh. Mom and Dad were good cooks but Mom always overlooked any meat. At Thanksgiving she started cooking the turkey on Wednesday. She cooked it at least 8 hours total. A couple of times it fell apart in the oven. Great memories but not great turkey.

Liver and onions, my mom cooked the liver for about 3 hours and it was drier than shoe leather. One day she watched Chef Buster Ambrosia, God Bless you My Heart, cook some liver and she followed his recipe. It was much better after that.

+1

As a kid I didn't know any better. Looking back it was certainly not great.

Hated steak as a kid. My folks cooked until it was shoe leather. Had a mid-rare steak in my early 20s and a whole new world opened up to me.

I didn't eat spaghetti for the longest time because my mom would make the Kraft boxed shells and processed tomato sauce.

I got burned out and then discovered hole in the wall places in high school and my life changed

My parents are both italian and good cooks, but every once in a while my mom would try to do a comfort dish and it never turned out good.

I remember when she tried to do chicken and dumplings

My mom is a wonderful cook but she can't grill for shite. She would grill hamburgers or steaks that would be burnt to a crisp on the outside and still cold rare on the inside.

mom made something called salmon croketts (sp?)
I remember those, whooo they were on the top 3 most disliked foods.

In general my mother cooked large quantities that were very plainly seasoned with almost no herbs...ever. For instance spaghetti sauce was homemade canned tomatoes, onion, celery, bell pepper, salt and pepper. It was extremely watery and we were not allowed but just a smidge of parm on top. There was nothing off putting about it, but there was little that made it appealing either. That describes much of my mothers cooking.

My top three are:

Spaghetti sauce
Salmon Croquettes
A tie between what ever food my father decided he 'missed' from childhood, usually something he never had eaten. Chitterlings that got thrown out was the most famous.

we were the opposite, my mom was great at comfort foods. It is when she deviated, we got pretty blah food.

Add me to the list of people who didn't eat a properly cooked steak until well into college. I was scared at first, couldn't get past seeing the pink center but good lord was it delicious. My family also cooked hamburgers to death. I think they just didn't want to stop drinking their beer so they would leave them on the grill.

My parents were good cooks, but I do not like the smell or taste of liver and onions.
