White Star Market, the Mid City food hall shuttered due to coronavirus mitigation measures, has notified its landlord it will not reopen—even after the government lifts the stay-at-home order.

Architect Josh Hoffpauir—who designed and co-owns Square 46, the mixed-use development on Government Street anchored by White Star Market—confirms he received a letter March 27 from White Star’s owner, Clark Gaines, stating that because of the pandemic the food hall is permanently closed.

In a statement to Daily Report, Gaines says, “based on the COVID-19 pandemic and the proclamations that have been issued, we could no longer operate our food hall at Square 46, nor could our vendors sustain themselves.”

John Bel killed them.

Unfortunately, Baton Rouge doesn’t seem like a good long term market for a concept like this.

I don't think they were doing all that great even before all of these shutdowns. The atmosphere sucked and the food wasn't food enough to bring me back consistenly.

Chow Yum Phat had the best food anyway, and I'd much rather go to their Perkins location.

The perkins location is better suited for them

I believe he was already considering a stand alone location.

Once CYP and MJs opened their separate locations there wasn't a reason to go there. All the other vendors were marginal at best.

I’m worried about red stick social as well.

Such a large venue, hope my feeling is wrong.

White Star wouldve been great if it opened closer to Goodwood/Airline.

Too much competition and high rent in MidCity

They’re hit or miss everywhere.

I’ve been to some (Nashville, Los Angeles) that are packed and seem very successful. Been to others that seem to be barely surviving. One I went to in downtown Santa Ana had only 1 vendor still open and they were out of most of their menu items.

Why The U.S. Food Hall Market May Be Expanding Too Quickly

It isn't a White Star but place in Dallas does well, 3 stories of food places and bars

Food halls are doing very well here. Well, they were pre-Covid.

Sucks for white star
