I'm a fan of Makers as an everyday go to, anyone have any recommendations of some things to try that has a slight sweetness/vanilla taste similar to Makers to try?

For a change of pace from Makers try Elijah Craig 12. It has that vanilla sweetness that you are looking for.

I mean that's maybe a valid excuse. I dunno though. I say you just bring him along. He needs to understand from an early age how important bourbon is.

Here is what I would suggest. Quick guesses on the numbers...not sure if they can be had for them...but more or less off the top of my head. Try for store picks on some like I know Martins has the big ER10s and maybe blantons and AE.

JPS 18 $300.00
Some sort of 4R LE $300.00
Willette pot still $40.00
WT 17yr $150.00
ECBP $100.00
Blantons SFTB $200.00
Reg Blantons $50.00
Barterhouse $100.00
Rhetoric $100.00
EHT single barrel $65.00
EHT barrel proof $70.00
EHT rye $65.00
Angels Envy $40.00
1.75 Baby Saz with saz rcp $35.00
1.75 Buffalo trace with OF rcp $35.00
Bookers $50.00
Smooth Ambler Rye $40.00
Smooth ambler 10yr $50.00
1.75 ER10 $50.00
Weller 12 $50.00 Make some PMP
Weller 107 $50.00
$1,940.00

That is a really solid list, however, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a JPS18 for this.

Speaking of, was it you NOLA that still has the JPS17s?

Yea I wasn't sure what they are going for these days. And I think you can get a 4R LE for less than 300? I just put 300 for both those becasue he said he didn't want to do more than that for a bottle. But if collectively he can get a 4R and JPS for 600 thats what I would do.

JPS 17s...whats that

Is anyone noticing a shortage of Blantons? I had not seen it at any of the liquor stores here in Savannah until I came across a dusty bottle out on the island. Some of the other store have a great selection of higher end bourbons but not Blantons.

Also I hear a lot of people here talking about what a great value Eagle Rare is.(29.99 here) I have been drinking Widow Jane, Basil Hayden, Bookers and Angel's Envy lately. How would you say it compares to these higher priced bourbons?

Blantons has been patchy for a while now.

Its as good or better than some of those.

You can get a 2015 4RSMBLE for $250-$300, probably closer to $300 though. A 2014 would run about $175-$200 right now I think.

I would make the argument that you could do a coupl different barrel picks of 4 roses, get 3-4 different mashbills for that price.

Also I'm not sure what I would take off the list but I would add a Rock Hill or ETL to it. Both are between $40-$70 with shipping and I think both are betting than Blantons personally.

Other than that a solid list. I would take that bar any day of the week.

Hmm. Well I would argue that ER is better than Basil Hayden's. Especially a store pick of ER, that is just good 10 year old bourbon. I haven't had Widow Jane unfortunately so can't compare.

Angels Envy is really good. I think it's price is always in fluctuation for me, I've seen it between $40 and $75 in the last year. It's not worth $75 to me, I think $50 is about the most I would want to spend on it. I also am not alway in the mood for that port finish versus ER I can always drink.

Lastly Bookers is a whole other animal than ER. Bookers is cask strength and packs a mighty punch. I'm a big fan of Bookers bc it has a bold flavor but again it's what your personal preference is.

You really can't go wrong with ER, especially at its price. Definitely a great bargain bourbon.

I think the consensus on them for the most part is that they suck as a retailer. Keep all the good stuff in the back and charge secondary. Have an auction outside the store for BTAC, stuff like that. That's why I don't like to give them my business.

That being said, they really know how to pick a good barrel of whiskey. Their smooth ambler picks have all been good, same with 1792. Never got around to trying their OESK though. I'm sure this 9 year will be just as good.

I don't think anyone has ever said his picks were bad he's just a tool.

He's doing a live auction for his allocated bottles this year apparently....
