Regarding your access to bourbon, proximity to bourbon production doesn't mean easy access. I think each state is allocated a certain amount to the distributors, so in a high consumption area the availability is low. For instance I live 14 miles from buffalo trace and have not seen Blanton's, etl, etc on the shelf in several years. Weller Sr and eagle rare seldom make it to the shelf. Compare that to when I lived in New Orleans, Blanton's was pretty easy to find and buffalo trace was sold at Costco. I've had the best luck finding bourbon outside of KY.
Regarding where to start, I would second finding a bar with a good selection and start with BT, eagle rare, Woodford and take note of what you like about each one. Then you can take steps in each direction to find your sweet spot. If tasting straight or with a drop of water is off putting, try a couple ice cubes. No shame in that.

I'm looking for a richer, smoother, creamy vanilla or caramel finish. More of an easy drinker without the spicy, cinnamon heat.
This is what Elijah Craig 12 Year Old used to be before they took the age statement away. There are still bottles of this out there.

I frequent calandros but working 7 days a week right now. Hopefully they’ll have it in a couple weeks. My TD approved bottle is running low.

I thin the KY Owl clocks in at about $140. Saw some in KY a few weeks ago and it was $280 at evry place I stopped, If you want some good rye for sippin or Old fashioneds these two are hard to beat. Both sub $50 range
The Pikesville is a Maryland style, which is less spice and a bit sweeter, High West is a Pennsylvania style. More spice and heat.

Nose is creamed corn, Strong notes of cinnamon and nutmeg on the mid palate, and leather bringing out the backend, just delightful.

I wanted to try that, but I have a hard time gambling on a $100 bottle. I was hoping Hokus would have it in the back bar for samples but I didn’t see it.
Anyone come across Smooth Ambler’s newest wheated bourbon “Big Level” yet? I really liked their bourbon line and “Contradiction” is one of my favorites, but haven’t seen anything other than the American for a few months now.
