Can someone recommend a bourbon for a novice?
Woodford Reserve or even better, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
The first one is about $30-$35, the Double Oaked is about $50-$55

I talked to Harvest today, asked them if there were any bottles unclaimed by winners that were not there. She said yes, but they have until Wednesday night to claim the bottle.
I asked if my name was already drawn, am I in the running for unclaimed bottles.
She said no, they gonna draw from non-winners.
So you and I are out.
She said next year, they gonna make winner be present.

Sounds good. It was small and you can tell it was their first time. Ill be back to support next year for sure.

Jefferson's may be the most boring bourbon I've ever drank. Maybe try something with some more rye in the mashbill... buffalo trace? Four roses also make excellent single barrel and small batches that are top notch but much more affordable than other SB's....those would be a good place to start

I love the woodford double oaked, but FWIW I find the new old forester 1910 to be a much better thought out and produced version of that. Same deep rich double oak flavor, but more balanced

Tip I got from another forum for the OF 1910 is to drop a dollop of aqua and let sit for 5 minutes. I was afraid to do that because of the 93 proof. I like my stuff hardy. But man, the cherry made way for an arse ton of oak and other tastes I couldn't quite figure out. That char makes for some complexity once the water has melded.

....and that's what I'll be doing for my first pour tonight. Thanks

There's also going to be 3 barrel picks of Knob Creek arriving at Oak Point fresh market in December. All are 13-14 years of age and trust me....they are full of flavor.

FPD: after hearing you talk about it I had to pour it, Breauxhaus

I grabbed one of those. I have like the OF dated lineups so far!
Scotch tonight while I eye up a new project.

What does the supply look like where you live? I like most things from Buffalo Trace but depending on the state a lot of their products are on allocation and hard to find.
Currently in Cartersville, GA, but I make regular runs to Atlanta and Tennessee (Chattanooga) for work purposes.
I presume Tennessee would open most doors?

What did they do to the double oak that makes it that much better? I assume it has a strong woody (oak) finish?
Eta: I'm not looking for a lot of bite. I tried an Old Grand Dad 114 tonight and while I liked it and enjoyed the complexity, it was too cinnamon and spicy for me to drink regularly. I'm looking for a richer, smoother, creamy vanilla or caramel finish. More of an easy drinker without the spicy, cinnamon heat.

It will to a degree. You should give Eagle Rare ($30 in LA) a try and 4 Rose single barrel ($40 in LA) and let us know what you think. You might want to try a bar with a really nice bourbon selection also.

Ok I take back what I said about finding a higher rye mashbill... that's what's gonna give you spice.
As far as the woodford double oak, it's normal woodford that's transferred to barrels that have been more deeply toasted to bring out more of the deeper wood sugars, and allowed to age further. The oak is VERY heavy. I love it, but the oak is a lot for some.
I would agree with the above post and find a good bourbon bar...let them know what you like... taste and find what you love.
