I’ve seen Dorignacs and other grocery stores have Eagle Rare select bottles. Can anyone school me on what that entails?
A number of distilleries offer store picks, what happens is when barrels are getting tasted, the better than average barrels are put to the side and not mixed with other standard barrels. Those barrels put to the side are offered to stores as barrel picks. Representatives of the store get to taste samples from 3-5 barrels and pick the barrel they want to purchase. The barrel is a single barrel and almost always a better bottle than the standard bottle of the same brand.

toured BT and a couple guys thought they would have BTAC in the gift shop for sale. At the end of the tour when they offered the samples of Eagle Rare, BT, Bourbon Cream, White Dog and Vodka they got pissed and walked out. They actually thought they were gonna get to try some Pappy. By the time we got done I bought a couple bottles of Blantons and those guys were still asking the lady at checkout why the couldnt just buy some Pappy. They finally told her the whole thing was a rip off, mind you the tours are free at BT. I told the one guy he better grab some Blantons, (3 years ago) and he said he only wanted the BTAC stuff he didnt drink shite bourbon.
Hahaha that's awesome.
They didn't have any Blantons for sale when I was there. Just a bunch of BT, ER, Vodka, and Cream.

Didnt realize they had that...seems like it might be good to go and priced well. Think ill have to order some of that me
Apparently they just raise the temps on their whiskey recipes to remove the grains and bottle it up. They use the vodka to subsidize the whiskey costs.
I think it's called Wheatley.
I'm not a big Vodka guy, but it was very drinkable neat.

Thanks, quite helpful.
What would make a barrel better than average? The oak from the barrel was a cleaner char or are there other factors given the batch was all barreled at the same time and stored in the same location?

All of the above are possible but the end result is the taste...

The barrels are picked to fit a certain flavor profile for ER same thing for any single barrel bourbon. The store pick barrels will have slightly different flavor profiles than the standard bottle from the distillery. This allows the distillery to sell those barrels that dont fit the house style to liquor stores as basically one off whiskies.

I got to take part in a Woodford barrel select. Gonna be a good one. Its at Oak Point in Central. I'll let y'all know when they receive the barrel if anyone is near Central and interested.

Heard that the ER store picks may be getting eliminated from the BT barrel program. Worth a pick up if you can find them!

Did yall taste the Woodford at barrel proof? Thats what we tasted and it was outstanding, however, they are not bottling at barrel proof so we declined to get a barrel

Yes we did. We chose the batch that was 129.4 proof. Those barrel proofs were great and yes it sucked to know they knock it down to 90.4. I think that's the finished proof...right?
Anyway we knocked the proof down with water on the 3 barrels and then made our decision.

I was pissed when I saw the price for the high proof Woodford coming out under the Masters collection line. 120 bones. It was awesome juice but is it better than ECBP at 65.99?
