I’ve had great Chinese in San Francisco and New York.
But if you want an answer that might be a bit more accessible for the SEC, Mr Chen’s in Birmingham is legit. The patrons are usually 75% Chinese, so I assume they know what they’re doing.

Mr Chow’s tempura shrimp app with the chili sauce. The entrees were good but not mind blowing

I don't think I've ever been there. I'll have to check it out. I've been meaning to go to that Ethiopian place on Greensprings too.

I always thought the Trey Yuen in Hammond was the best one. RIP.
What is the name of the chinese restaurant in Kenner that people on this board really like? I can't recall the name right now.

Not sure about kenner but local Chinese food, I think Royal China on Vets near Dorignac’s is the best locally.

I remember enjoying that place on Essen Lane before it closed down. Name escapes me.

Masterpiece in Atlanta is solid as is Northern China Eatery
Mr. Jiu's is a more modern take in SF but delicious

I also heard the Trey Yuen in Mandeville is pretty awful now, and agree with whoever said the one in Hammond went from 5 star to downhill in the 90's...but they never had a buffet at the Hammond location.
The Wongs are legit restaurant people, but feel like they have the iron in too many fires with Cate Street Seafood, Boston, One Thirteen, the Mandeville Trey Yuen, and probably one more that I've forgotten. Yeah I know supposedly it's the second generation running them but who knows.

I know you're looking for American Chinese food, but here are some pics of my meals when I was in China.
At a Seafood restaurant on the coast:
Spicy noodles, bean curd salad, whole cooked fish in a brown sauce, pork dumplings, shrimp in a terrible goopy sauce, and lotus flower root
Buffet at the Four Seasons:
Overcooked panfried crawfish, noodles, raw oyster, seaweed salad, beef and chicken
Breakfast dumplings at the Hilton:
Hole in the wall place on the side of the highway:
Nuts cooked in a sauce with onions and bell peppers, cooked whole fish, some type of salad. The dish in the back was roasted donkey shoulder, pretty tough. Also had pickled donkey stomach. Do not recommend.
First meal in Beijing was a 12 course dinner. This was the Pork Belly in a sweet teriyaki sauce:
Shitake mushrooms with carrots and cucumber I believe. Also a pork dumpling.
Last night back at the seafood restaurant:
Whole fried fish, pork belly, bean curd salad, beef and peppers, fried chicken feet, fried shrimp, beef skewers. Can't remember what the veggies in the back were.
Noodle bowls and kimchi at a Buddhist temple we visited:

Begoni Bistro is one of my favorites. I'm in SF every few weeks and make it a point to head here.
Obviously not the U.S., but House of Gourmet in Toronto is very good, too.

Meh, overrated. Red Pearl is better IMO.

I was a food service rep during the 80's and early 90"s on the northshore and watched them grow and prosper. I spent a lot of time in "the back of the house" at their places. The Wong brothers were great people, good operators and wonderful chefs. Sad to say their kids are not close to sharing those same traits.

I'm partial to San Francisco - the Chinese presence is just so enormous there. R&G (touted by Anthony Bourdain, and mentioned by others above) is great, but I think Ton Kiang, out in the Richmond, might be the best I've had. Also love Yank Sing for incredible over-the-top dim sum.
Chicago is underrated, with many brilliant spots, including Lao Sze Chuan, Sun Wah, and my sentimental favorite, "Little" Three Happiness (on the south side of Cermak).
None of these are extremely expensive, btw.

I went a few years ago and it just seemed like a run of the mill place and I was confused what all of the hype was about
