I think this was the first whiskey shot I ever took, and I threw up shortly afterward.
Awful stuff

A lot depends on how much you want to spend. Having said that, I think that these are good whiskey choices for reasonable price: Bulleit, Woodford Reserve, and Gentleman Jack. There's probably a good chance that the snob will turn their nose up at Gentleman Jack just because it's from the same company that makes Jack Daniels.

Kentucky Owl
You can spend 100-400 a bottle depending on what you buy but it’s an excellent bourbon with a good balanced taste

For a single malt scotch get The Belvenie double barrel 12 year old

A whiskey snob? Oof.... There are some really expensive whiskeys out there.
IMO, go the opposite direction and get him some moonshine. Some of the flavors are pretty fun to try. It's not something a "serious" brooding afficionado would be into, but it's a good change of pace.
If you want a safe bet for a bourbon, the four roses single barrel is about as good as you can get for $50.

I picked up this stuff at Total Wine for my brother for Christmas and he said he's really enjoying it. I'm not a refined enough bourbon drinker to know why it's good or not.

Get him a barrell aged Rum.
Most Bourbon drinkers love it.
Get a Zafra or Ron Zacapa.

Find some black market 10 Year Old Charter - nothing more snobbish than paying $500-$1000 a bottle for something that was $18 fifteen years ago. Eagle Rare is from the same distillery and as close to 10-year as you can get.
Charter 8 is literally lighter fluid and Charter 12 is too acidic and too aromatic for my taste. Their old 10 year old was the perfect blend between the bouquet and the buzz. Spent many countless nights with 10 year old Charter and Tiger Stadium Saturday nights. Sadly the distillery dumped all their 10, 8 and 12 into 4 year aged crap.
Also Calumet Farms is some really good stuff. I prefer the smoothness and aromatic pleasingness to be fuller and less acidic than Blanton’s. But I’ve never cared for Blanton’s, Woodford Reserve, or Booker’s.

Double Barrel or Double Wood? I think it's the latter, but it's basically the same. The whisky is aged in two types of wood, in two different barrels -- and it's a really nice scotch.
Glenmorangie is also another nice scotch and they have several varieties, depending on what was in the barrel before the put their scotch in it. Glenmorangie won't break the bank either. The new varieties are good, but I go back to the classic when I'm wanting something that is not from Islay.

Calumet 15 is my favorite bourbon right now.
