Whatever happened to Stella! in New Orleans

Best dining experience of my life. I think the Chef's name was Boswell? Did he open another restaurant? I just remember the food, wine, and wait staff was superb.
That chocolate grilled cheese might have been the best dessert I've ever had.

Not much of a market for restaurants at that price point in New Orleans IMO. There are a ton of other New Orleans restaurants that one could have a great meal at a lower price. His restaurant Stanley is still open.

$1000 chef’s coats and a Ferrari is what happened. All while changing the locks and refusing to pay his staff their final paychecks. He admitted that if it wasn’t for Stanley, Stella would have closed even sooner. The duck 5 ways was a great dish but the white glove treatment atmosphere and the price point just didn’t lead to many return visits

The owner was a crook and a piece of shite and it finally caught up with him is what I've heard over and over.

Damn had no idea it closed. Been many years since I lived there. Was a great place. Sucks.

Great place. Hard to believe how abrupt the ending was in 2014. Had some incredible meals there.

Friend,
I never considered Stella! to be that expensive considering the level of dining there. It was at the level of NY’s best during that time in terms of presentation, ingredients, and service. I found the scallops and steak dishes better than the duck five ways.
I actually was, for a time, friends with Scott. He brought me to his test kitchen in Mid City where he showed me some of his latest creations. Toward the end, he became obsessed with caffeine. He essentially had a orgo lab set up to extract and purify caffeine. It was quite the operation, resembling what some labs deep the jungles of South America might look like. He was a culinary genius and was bringing the chemistry of food into the equation, inspired by Nathan Myhrvold who has or had a gallery on Royal — Modernist Cuisine Gallery.
He became obsessed with racing and spent more and more time at the track in Avondale. Expenses piled high and restaurant prices did not follow. It’s a shame, for its short stint from 2001 to 2014 represents a time when New Orleans legitimately could claim one of the world’s best restaurants. Metairie of course can still make that claim with Impastato’s, but not New Orleans. I sure do miss it.

Had a couple corporate meals there and it was amazing. Nicest wine I ever drank was a 1985 Chateau Lynch-Bages at Stella.

Friend,
I remember going there in the summer of 2007 with a date and Mother. The three of us actually went to Canal Place first because I knew she loved charm brackets. I had recently seen Mignon Faget’s latest collection of charm brackets in the flyer Mother received a few weeks earlier. I surprised her getting her a silver alligator. She loved it, or at least acted like it. Mother bought some of those horrid fleur de lis tumblers that were so popular, forcing me to carry the bag all the way across the Quarter to Stella! I believe it was her plan to prevent me from holding hands with my date. It worked.
That meal was probably my twentieth or so visit. A new item found its way to the menu and Scott told us we had to try it. I had some misgivings but before I knew it he had brought me a small bowl of shark fin soup. It was, I believe supposed to be served with sea bass, but he had just wanted me to try it. I did and found it was okay. It tasted like seafood broth, nothing special. I do not understand why it is considered a delicacy. This was around the age of social media only being used by college kids. A year or so later, when it became more widespread, word got out that he was serving shark fin soup, causing quite the uproar. After that, Stella! stopped serving it. No loss to the restaurant.

It worked the second you brought "Mother" to dinner on a date.

Friend,
Although I had saved much of my earnings from my time as a street car conductor in the early to mid 2000s, one of the greatest times of my life, I could not afford Stella! without some parental assistance. Besides, the only purpose of dating is to find a suitable spouse. Since your spouse will become part of the family, it is not an unreasonable or illogical conclusion to decide to bring family on dates with you. To leave family out of the equation, I would argue, is to set yourself up for disaster. Perhaps there would be far more successful relationships and far fewer aimless relationships if the focus on early dates was getting to know each other and each other’s families rather than the fornication which has become acceptable is our broken culture.

Friend,
You are single and your only friend is "Mother" for a reason. Instead of maybe meeting a nice woman, maybe settling down and moving out of "Mother"s basement, you effectively ran away any woman you may have had a chance with.

The best thing about Stella was the article in GQ Magazine about Nic Cage’s wild encounter there.

Ate one meal there and it was an incredible experience from service to food... old friend is high end chef and owner of a restaurant group based out of NO and I asked how feasible Stella was financially.. his answer was it wasn’t and never was meant to be.. the place was a show piece that was never sustainable in that Market.

ate there twice, it was definitely very good, I guess the margins just weren't there
