Heading up there in August to visit gf's family. They want me to cook "Cajun" one night. Roughly 20 people. Right now I'm thinking of grilling some local fish with Nola BBQ shrimp sauce and mashed potatoes w/ greens. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

If they (Yankees) are requesting Cajun they may be thinking something like jambalaya or étouffée.

You may have to explain the mashed potatoes and greens thing to them. That's a cajun delicacy that is unheard of up here. /sarcasm.

I'd agree with some of the other suggestions that étouffée of something along those lines would be a better fit for northerners requesting "cajun."

Just drench everything in Tabasco and Tony's... tell 'em that's how we do it down in N'awlins. Don't put too much work in to it. Damn Yankees won't know the difference. Drink beer, nail gf in her family's house, lay on the beach, profit. It's a vacation.

Parents have a house in the Vinyard? Sounds like a keeper.
I would make crawfish etoufee or jambalaya personally.

Do a fresh corn maque choux , an étouffée with grits or rice and grill steaks , using the étouffée as a sauce for both. Bananas Foster for dessert.

My only concern wih jambalaya is finding good sausage to use. Kielbasa just won't do it

I have cooked for many a "yankee friend" in Boston, New Haven, NYC, etc... the one dish they can't seem to get over is "Shrimp Diane" from Paul Prudhomme. Just cut the pepper a little. :) This dish, whether served over rice" or simply with a toasted and buttered loaf of French bread, has had the most impressive reception over staples like Jambalaya and Etoufee.

Chargrilled oysters another goo option. How do the northern Atlantic oysters taste/compare to louisiana?

You are setting yourself up for failure.

It's not in Martha's vineyard.

It's ON Martha's vineyard.

Get it right the first time.

But to answer your question, a good seafood gumbo is probably the right answer. It's always cool there so you want something warm but satisfying.

Griled fish and bbq ahrimp aren't Cajun, though delicious.

Loved ahrimp Diane Pridhomme style.

Shrimp or crawfish étouffée.

For jambalaya or anything else needing smoked sausage, bring it or ship ahead of time. Simple solutions. Ship some boudin while you're at it. Grill it.

Might be a little hot for gumbo. Yankees I cook for in NYC like Jambalaya, Mexican cornbread, Corn Maque Choux, Collard Greens, Okra and tasso, and Creole white beans.
