Is it actual catfish? They do not reference catfish anywhere on their menu and call everything C-fish and say the C stands for “Crawfords.” To me that screams Basa or Swai.

Unless something has changed in the past year or so, as per Ken "Catfish" Crawford, it is pond raised catfish and each piece is trimmed to remove any skin and brown meat.

Best catfish in BR, hands down!

I don't think it is, I think we asked once. It's still good, but not catfish.

Cork's has good catfish.

Not sure what Crawford uses but just so everyone knows, Swai is a catfish. It’s just raised in cages in rivers of Vietnam instead of ponds in the USA.

Yes. But it cannot be called catfish in Louisiana (and some other states).

...hence, why it's not referred to catfish on the menu. But if you ask him, he can still technically say it's catfish.

Uncle T’s Oyster Bar serves the same junk. I no longer order fish from a place if the venue’s menu doesn’t specify what it is.

I agree with Mike Anderson’s. They declined some for a while but lately it is back to being top 3 in the city for fried seafood. The seafood platter is enough for two people and it’s perfect.

Also shoutout to their chargrilled oysters, which I took forever to try for some reason. And the only place around that has a broiled seafood platter.

Fast and cheap - Off the Hook is worth a stop if you’re in the corporate college area already.

It’s completely unacceptable for any place selling itself as a Louisiana “seafood house” to even think of slinging out that crap.

Caveat: I have no idea if Crawford's actually sells catfish or not - or if the owner tries to tell everyone it's catfish when it's not.

But a restaurant owner, employee, menu, etc. cannot call basa, tra, swai and pangasius "catfish." That's a federal law.

quote:

Basa (Pangasius bocourti) — a Siluriformes fish species primarily from Vietnam. It cannot be labeled “catfish” in the U.S.; it is typically sold as “basa.”

Swai (Pangasius hypothalamus) — a Vietnamese import; the frozen fillets may be labeled as “striped pangasius”, “tra” or “sutchi.” It cannot be labeled “catfish” in the U.S
USDA.gov

The state has additional information and rules.

quote:

Definitions from RS 3:4733
(1) "Catfish" means only those species within the family Ictaluridae, Ariidae or Loricariidae.
(18) "Siluriforme" means fish in the taxonomic order Siluriformes and including those within the taxonomic families Siluridae, Clariidae, and Pangasiidae and those commonly known as basa and tra.

E.(1) No owner or manager of a restaurant that sells imported catfish shall misrepresent to the public, either verbally, on a menu, or on signs displayed on the premises, that the catfish is domestic.

I agree 100%

Even Duke's in Denham says their shrimp is imported. Unacceptable in South Louisiana
