What price is a ripoff for boiled crabs?

Do you pay by the pound of dozen for boiled crabs?
By the pound you should hope to get some full crabs (hopefully not full of liquid). By the dozen you are hoping they are full but could be empty.

I've never bought boiled crabs by the pound. I've never seen them sold that way.

I've never seen them for sale $/lb, always $/dozen. Every place I've ever bought from is usually pretty fair when/if they're empty. Had one guy sell us 3 dozen mediums a couple weeks ago for $20 because he got drunk, fell out his boat, lost his phone, and lost who he had down for selects.

Same here, always by the count, not weight.
And most reputable seafood dealers will tell you if the crabs are light and not as full as they can be.
Last crabs I got, the guy only had medium males on hand since the females were, according to him, kites and he would not even bring them into his shop. Plus he gave us 15 for the price of a dozen.

Bevi Seafood, when I bought crabs from them about 2 years ago or so, sold them by the pound.

All depends. Richard’s in Abbeville sells them for as much as $18 per crab. By the dozen as well, guess it just depends what you want.

I’ve never eaten a big #1 there, apparently you have to get there right when they open.

Crabs are too damn expensive at restaurants. It's way cheaper to buy live and boil yourself. Last year I could get live large crabs for 25-30 per dozen. Haven't bought any this year though.

Ripoff is in the eye of the buyer, right?. As a guy in his 50s I remember when boiled crabs were $5/dz. Last winter during Covid Kenner Seafood was selling them for $72/dz. extra large or jumbo (someone tell me the difference), I can't remember which. Still, $5 a crab is better than $18! 
The problem I have is that the size of crabs is subjective. I've been sold large crabs that resemble medium and jumbo crabs that aren't really.
