I'm toying with the idea of getting a smoker. I've never had one before so I'm not looking to break the bank, but at the same time don't want to buy a piece of junk. I've talked to a friends that have had electric that like theirs and other friends that swear by charcoal. Also, the Pit Barrel Cookers seem pretty cool. So what can you folks suggest for me? Any and all input is appreciated.

Primo or Green Egg. Something to that effect. Will last forever and you can smoke, grill, pretty much everything you want to do.

If you don't have the money for the one I mentioned above, we have an Oklahoma Joe with a side firebox at the deer camp and it does pretty good for about $200. I think we bought it at Lowes.

Not looking for a ceramic grill at the moment, strictly smokers. Thanks though.

I'd add "Smokin' It" to the list.

I'm a big fan of the pellet style, but I saw this at academy the other day.

I think it will be my next one, but I will convert it to propane rather than just wood.

Get a Big Green Egg very versatile and easy to use and clean up is super easy. You will not have to buy another smoker or grill ever. If you have a bigger budget and dont mind having a dedicated smoker. I would go with a Backwoods, holds temp great, puts out a great product and smaller models can cook 8 slabs of ribs, 3-4 Briskets or 6-8 pork butts.

Do you think you will like the process of low and slow smoking or do you just want good BBQ? If the former, get an old country or Oklahoma Joe offset smoker; if the latter, get a pellet smoker with temperature control.

This is what I have (#3) and I highly recommend going pellet over electric. Taste/bark is just better on a pellet. Just as easy. Big regret of mine not looking harder at pellets. I kinda want to get a Yoder.

Weber smokey mountain...awesome smokers. Can go for a while and hold good temp with a few mods. $200-$400

Ceramic (grren egg/primo)...very versatile cookers. Can smoke a brisket for 16 hours or grill steaks at 700. Have fun chasing the smoke ring though $1000

Offset stick burner...expensive, big and heavy, inefficient, and need alot of attention. But badass bbq. $1000s depending on size

Electric or propane...no

You don't have to spend that much on an offset. You can find offsets for pretty dang cheap that will do the job just fine.

If you think you will be smoking copious amounts of food or plan on making beef jerky, get a vertical smoker. Lots of grill space and doesn't take up that much room.
