People in Louisiana take way too much pride in it just because it’s something unique to the area.
People just like to shite on (especially this site) anything unique and good that Louisiana does. Especially if it’s traditional.

I wonder how high the prices have to go for the masses to realize this.
I can spend the money I earn as I please, and no preservative and chemical filled out of a tube poosbury cinnamon rolls going to be better than a Dong Phuong king cake

It's fun like once a year

I might be in the minority here, but my favorite is the McKenzie's plain (no cinnamon) king cake with the purple, green, and gold granulated sugar (no white icing). I grew up eating their king cakes and even worked there when in high school.
Whenever I go to the South Shore during Mardi Gras season, I will go to the Tastee's on West Esplanade to buy a couple. Tastee bought McKenzie's recipes.
Haydels will also make a special order king cake with just the purple, green, and gold granulated sugar, no white icing.

Basic king cakes can be awful. Dry, crusty, sugar slathered disappointment.
But the best king cakes are incredible. Like a taste of heaven.

At it's heart, it's brioche:
...which is basically a bread with egg and loads of butter - and sometimes sugar. Fresh brioche can be amazing. And like any food, if it's made poorly, it'll taste poorly, and if it's old it'll be stale.
It's funny that over the years people have turned king cakes into just a big cinnamon roll and now people complain that it's nothing but a big cinnamon roll. While I like good, fresh cinnamon rolls too, their dough doesn't contain eggs, if I'm not mistaken.
But these days, people equate king cakes with stale sysco cinnamon rolls.

It's not around all year. How about the morons waiting to park for 2 hours at Randazzo's and paying for bread with decorations marked up 1000% ?

It’s tradition and build up excitement for Mardi Gras. Who got the baby is a fun little game and has a certain Louisiana charm to it.

$40 for a glorified cinnamon roll...

They are extremely overrated. Many are nasty.
Mardi Gras is stupid.
New Orleans is trashy.

No such thing.
If it is filled with something it is not a king cake.

Because people are addicted to social media attention thinking what they're doing is the coolest because what they have or are doing is the best.
People in the office at my old job learned pretty quick not to offer expensive king cakes in the drivers lounge because we will 100% drop a grocery store king cake in return. I'm sure as shite not spending $25+ on something like that, even for my own family. Coworkers will be lucky to get Walmart king cake in return.

Sugar loaded and disgusting ... cake in general sucks but King cake takes it to a new level.

Overhyped cinnamon rolls.
