I feel like I made this post 10 years ago, and was lambasted by king cake defenders. King cake Once a month is appreciated, but getting a king cake 2-3x a week is overkill.

A good cream cheese king cake is tough to beat. The average grocery store bought king cakes are garbage.

Explosion into shipping has ruined it. They are more concerned with shipping at a high cost and locals are dumb enough to pay $35 and up. For a cinnamon roll with icing and colored sugar. Or brioche with the sugar.

They taste good but since the evolution of social media, i feel like king cake and crawfish have become this weird obcession type food that for some odd reason people want to let everyone know they are not only excited about them but are having it.

This, for so many things.

Seems like boring people trying to find excitement wherever they can.

It’s just a glorified cinnamon roll. Nothing special. In fact, you can make a damn good “king cake” at home with Pillsbury boxed hot roll mix.

People in Louisiana take way too much pride in it just because it’s something unique to the area.

I did just that! Was good. I’ll buy a king cake or 2 per season, but that’s my limit. The cinnamon rolls work for me.

Yea you can make one at home for a fraction of the cost and it’ll be just as good as store bought

I wonder how high the prices have to go for the masses to realize this. Will people pay $50 for a cinnamon roll?

I love a good king cake. And I think the fact they are only available a certain time of year adds to it. But we all like different things and if you like a chocolate chip cookie then you eat whatever makes you happy.

I completely agree. The gap between the best and worst is razor thin. It’s bread and icing.

But some have more bread than others and some have more icing than others. It’s all about finding what ratio works best for you. There isn’t a “best king cake” like there’s a “best pizza” in a certain area

Unless they changed the ingredients, I hated that stuff.

It was basically cinnamon ice cream.

Hard pass for me.

I agree with you

That said, “the best king cakes are merely ok relative to other cakes/desserts” is a pretty common take and not really too edgy

Razor thin…not imho.

“Grocery store” king cake is pretty meh, especially if it’s just plain.

Now, determining a favorite is tough, just because there are so many slight variations (for bread and sugar). When you include fillings, it even tougher.

I’m just glad it’s only seasonal.

I love New Orleans, I love Mardi Gras, but king cake is 100% overrated and overpriced!

A buddy of mine mailed me a pecan one from Dong Phuong’s Bakery the other day. Pretty damn good. Kind of has the consistency of a regular cake.

It’s honestly the Louisiana culinary equivalent of the “McRib” at McDonalds. Seasonal/limited time causes people to elevate iit’s quality/taste in their minds over reality.
