After several postponements my son and his fiance have decided to have their wedding in New Orleans. Now I have to plan a rehearsal dinner in New Orleans and while I grew up in NOLA I have been living in Baton Rouge since 1996 so I am not familiar with the restaurant scene. I would like to keep it in the warehouse district as close to the Hilton Riverside as possible. We will have about 30 people at the rehearsal dinner and I would like to keep the budget around $3000. Any suggestions?

Good luck... many will command more $$ for a minimum. That being said maybe not right now with things in the shitter. We got married in NOLA and had about 22 I think.l for the rehearsal dinner. I ran into 5-8k minimums all over the place, again things were “normal”.

Ended up at Luke... albeit not one of the fancy joints in town I wasn’t about to put down 5k for 20 people to eat. They took care of us and the food was solid. They put us in one of their secluded rooms. Was a good time.

If you are dead set on staying in the warehouse district, look into Meril and Calcasieu.

Calcasieu is Donald Link’s Catering and Event Companh. They have a few rooms that may fit what your looking for.

Neither may be open or doing private dining given everything going on.

$3000

Not an easy find, although maybe Covid has caused restaurants to be more flexible.

When we did ours it seemed like $5k was the going minimum. Ended up at Mr. B’s and couldn’t have been happier. But obviously that’s not warehouse district.

I figured $100 per head but can go over $3000 if necessary. I am not necessarily married to having it in the warehouse district but since everyone is staying at the Hilton I would like to try and keep it as close as possible.

Not New Orleans, if that's your budget.

Calcasieu is the answer. Great space. My brother had his rehearsal dinner there, and it was really good.

Couchon has a private room. I’ve been to one there and it was very nice. It checks your requirements, no idea on $$!

3 grand may be a challenge even during these times.

Are you including an open bar or any type of alcohol in that figure?

I have no knowledge of cost at all because my parents footed the bill, but we had ours at Tujaque's in their upstairs room. People still tell us how great that rehearsal dinner was. Great food, plenty of drinks, and we had a brass band come play there too.

It's not that $100/head is a poor budget, it's just that a lot of NOLA restaurants have a minimum and $3k often doesn't reach that mark.

I'm not an expert, so if I'm wrong someone please correct me. That was just my experience about 3 years ago.

No. We will serve alcohol but I am not including that in my $3000 number. I am looking for a private dining room and to have 2-3 main course options. I understand alcohol will add significantly to this but am willing to negotiate that separately.

Understood. My thought is that if these restaurants are hurting as bad as they say that they are then this is an easy little bit of business that they may consider now during these times as opposed to in the past.

We had our rehearsal dinner at Grand Isle Restaurant in 2012 and all guests stayed at the Hilton Riverside. It was an easy walk and the food was great. I’m sure a lot has changed since 2012 but I would suggest reaching out to them. They provided a salad or soup, 3 entree options and 2 dessert options. Also had 4-5 different appetizers scattered around the room while everyone mingled. They had a small pirogue filled with ice / salt and 150 shucked oysters. We basically just ran a tab to be able to have all bar options. I think all in it was around $5-$6K for about 40 people. No complaints and everyone still raves about the rehearsal dinner.

I've been to one at Broussard's. They had cocktail hour first in courtyard, then dinner in private room.

Annunciation has a really nice upstairs area, good size for that many people.

Calcasieu is the easy answer here. It is above Cochon, and it offers several different spaces that can fit your group, with options from a buffet with passed hors d’oeuvres to family style shared entrees to plated dinners. Various pricing points, various alcohol options. You can choose traditional LA fare, or menu items from the styles of the various Link group restaurants.

If you want something uptown and maybe a tad more relaxed, consider Costera, Spanish restaurant at the corner of Robert and Prytania. Private room can hold up to 50, and It does offer family style shared dishes too.

Friend,

I always recommend Impastato’s, the best Italian restaurant in America. Its location just north of Lakeside Shopping Center is convenient for those using both Causeway and I-10. Its waitstaff and chefs, unlike many other restaurants, haven’t missed a beat during COVID-19.

Impastato’s does a great rehearsal or reception package for around $60 a person, which includes drinks — tap water is my preference — and Mr. Joe’s five course special. At that price you will be limited in entree selections, but for five or ten dollars more you can open the whole arsenal of entree selections, including the state’s best soft shell crab dish and the smoked Prime filet. If you exclude drinks the price is just $45 a person. Unlike most restaurateurs, Mr. Joe does not want to gouge you for celebrating a family milestone.

You will not find it a better restaurant or price. I have had rehearsal meals at some of the aforementioned recommendations, and left less than satisfied by the food and service and very sad for the people whom I know spent well north of $100 per head. If you do choose Impastato’s tell them TulaneLSU sent you and enjoy! Impastato’s dinner parties.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

P.S. Here are pictures from a five course meal I had there last month:
