I recently had my CC hacked, which is the third time in as many years. I asked the CC fraud department how am I getting hit so often, and she said one of the big ways now is a waiter snapping a pic of your card when they are taking it to run it at their register. We all are aware of the gas pump scanners, but this one was both shocking and obvious to me. (Another method that I was unaware of are blutooth scanners that can pick up your phone if I remember her explanation correctly)

I never really thought of this, because I have always had a naive trust in the waitstaff taking my cards. I'm sure it's still a small percent overall, but it is something to be aware of.

The real question is how do we prevent this? I do not carry that amount of cash on me anymore, nor do I want to hit the ATM when going out to a restaurant. I think a big push for running cards at the table using mobile devices is the needed, because it's the only way to keep your card in your possession or at least your sight at at all times.

Main reason why you should always use a credit card and not a debit card.

Wait staff steals your numbers? Oh well, CC card fixes it and the responsible party is arrested.

ETA: That is to say, there will always be a way for thieves and scumbags to try to do their thing. Using a CC protects you

Indeed! I never use a debit card. It's strictly for ATM hitups. Still it is a bit cumbersome to have to update my CC info everywhere when this happens. Plus it's frustrating to have to go through the process of the fraud claim. It's especially harmful to people who don't consistently monitor their charges (I do, which is why I catch these so quickly)

My wife got mad at me sunday for complaining that the server took too long to bring my check back after I handed it to him. He took the check book and the next time I see him he is re-filling waters on nearby tables, bringing out apps, and a couple of other tasks. It was about 6-7 minutes before he came back with my card and check. As a patron if I give you my debit card you go run that right away and come back. I didn't even see it in his pouch, which means it was just sitting there at the wait station un-attended.

Somebody needs to create an app where you can just get the check, look at it, and pay it from where you are using your card on your phone.

There’s absolutely no reason some little SJW waiter or waitress needs to be running off to some corner with a credit or debit card anymore.

Should be mandatory hand held devices used at the table. They are mandatory in Canada.

The time I really felt uneasy was when I had a coupon sent to my phone and the waiter had to take my brand new iPhone to the back in order to process.

Same way Canada and Europe has done it for years, bring the card scanner to the table. No clue why it's not more common here.

Table scanners are use in a lot of other countries. Should be used more often in the U.S.

Gotta be because of some weird social faux pas having to do with manners or something.

Which is weird, because it’s totally acceptable to drop cash on the checkbook, which we all know is laden with trace amounts of cocaine and fecal matter.

Cash is trashy and unsanitary.

It's pretty standard in Europe, too. They come out with the check, swipe, done.

I'd imagine it's not done here because they aren't required to by law. The cheap arse restaurant owner isn't paying for the equipment and the credit card companies sure as hell aren't either. Until they're forced, it'll be the way it is now.

I actually think this does exist. I think you can do it through an app called TabbedOut and also through OpenTable. Of course the place you’re at would have to have it set up.

If I were a waiter, this is when I would be my quickest. It's the last thing the customer is going to remember before they tip.

Most online retailers ask for your zip code. That isn’t printed on the card. I guess these thieves could just guess zip codes til it works, but you would think there’d be a safeguard for that

I thought OpenTable was for making reservations.

Didn’t know you could use it to settle up.

Don’t blink your headlights at someone with them off. Gang initiation. They’ll come kill your entire family

I would imagine there’s multiple ways to steal CC info doing this as well

I know, bro. They also hide under your SUV on the Wallmarks lot and grab you by the ankles when you try to open the car door.
