Somebody needs to create an app where you can just get the check, look at it, and pay it from where you are using your card on your phone.

There’s absolutely no reason some little SJW waiter or waitress needs to be running off to some corner with a credit or debit card anymore.

In Europe they bring a wireless reader that also prints the receipt right after with the device. It works fine if you don’t need to tip, but over here where tipping is part of the equation it would seem awkward to have a waiter hovering over you.

I just got back from Peru. Waitstaff there, bring a card scanner/printer to your table to run your credit card.

I'm sure this cuts back on CC scams.

Every time I go to Canada they bring you the card reader device and walk away. The device then prompts for tips before printing the receipt

They brought a handheld card reader to our table in Paris in 2001. I was immediately mad that we did not have it at home.

Just had a Shreveport waiter bring a phone and square type reader to the table. Only took 18 years for us to start getting with the program.

Had lunch at Dragos yesterday and they bring the scanner to the table and make a point to let you know they can’t take the card from the table.

There’s a couple reasons we don’t have the table side card readers. 1 is that we generally have larger restaurants so they require a lot more hardware. Many places in Europe just have 2-3 waiters at a time.

I agree they are the tits and Europe’s had them forever.

The table side ordering for waiters is great too, really cuts down on their ordering time. They can take your order instantly at the table. Something like just need one more beer, boom done instantly.

The US seems to be the only country in the world where you actually hand your credit card to the waiter and they disappear while they run your card. Even Mexico, of all places, is more current than we are whereby the waiter brings a wireless machine to your table and you insert the card yourself. The waiter never touches your card. The rest of the world has been doing this for almost 10 years.

Main reason why you should always use a credit card and not a debit card. Wait staff steals your numbers? Oh well, CC card fixes it and the responsible party is arrested.

What is the difference in debit card and credit card when it comes to theft? Both are backed and insured by the FDIC. I've had my debit card stolen and the thief got $50 in gas and some groceries. I contacted my bank and their fraud department, and got everything returned to me.

Debit card is direct access to your cash. Maybe not a big deal when it's $50, but say they run up $1000 on it. And a lot of banks don't automatically return the money until their fraud investigation is complete. It happened to me a few months ago and it took almost a week for them to replace the $750. No idea how the debit card was stolen because we hardly use them. Credit card companies usually remove the questionable charge immediately, and even if they don't it's usually removed before you have to pay the bill.

In this day and age, it's inevitable your credit card or debit card info are going to be stolen and used fraudulently. I do things to minimize the risk, but know it's eventually going to happen again so don't sweat it too much.

That was $50. No big deal.

Theoretically they could drain your checking account with a debit card. Then you face the possibilities of overdrawing when your mortgage or some big auto-debit hits. With a credit card, they can spend whatever and you've got at least 30-40 days before you actually "owe" that money to get everything straightened out
