I drink a lot of IPA's, especially DIPA's. I've pretty much had every style and have tried numerous different breweries. That said, I've been hearing about this beer for awhile now so when I was in Orange Beach last week I picked up a six pack of it and I got a four pack of their special release Jai Alai aged in white oak barrels.

The regular JA was close to undrinkable. Completely unbalanced leaving a bitterness and an odd after taste. Basically it was a can of garbage. The special realese was better but still average at best.

The reviews have it as 4*+. Am I missing something here?

IMO, a tell tale sign that a beer is average.. its available in every store you go to, has no limit on the quantity to purchase, and the shelves are fully stocked.

Sounds like an accurate description of IPA's in general.

This has no bearing on how great a beer is. There are plenty of widely distributed beers that are great.

I like the White Oak version a lot better. Truth is there are just much better options now. In 2013, it was one of the best IPAs in the market.

You probably got some that weren't overly fresh. That beer seems to nose dive after it's a few weeks old. A two month old taste like dog shite. A two week old one it's pretty great imho

It's a good beer, what is the date on the can? As mentioned the white oak is damn good.

It doesn't wow me like it does so many other people, but it's still a solid IPA. I still prefer Two Hearted or Founder's Centennial for a mass produced craft IPA.

You gonna tell us what the date was on the can or are you just trolling?

More for me then. Jai Alai to me is exactly what an IPA should taste like.

Anyone else distancing themselves from IPA's as you age? I don't see the allure of them like I did 8-10 years ago. I know taste buds change, so there's that.

Fair point. Reading that statement again, I do sound like a beer snob. I should have said that beers that are difficult to obtain because of high demand generally indicates that it is a good beer. However, like you said, there are several good beers that are widely available.

in all likelihood it had some age on it. jai alai is a good ipa when fresh but does fall off rather quickly. i don't hesitate buying it at a month old or less

I prefer sours to IPAs, but it's harder to find good sours than it is to find good IPAs, in south Louisiana.

I do still like IPAs, though.

Somewhat. I prefer the doubles and triples now more than the reg IPA.

A little, but it has more to do with the increased availability of them. Here in Alabama, it's only been since 2008 that we could even buy quality high gravity beers.

But when I go to the beer store, the IPA and porter/stout aisles are still the only ones I really hit. Maybe the sours aisle, though I've found those to be really hit or miss. Some are outstanding, some are barely drinkable.

More like a beer noob that tries to act like a snob. Who doesn't check the date before purchasing an IPA?
