So we are doing our annual crawfish boil this weekend and we always order 7 live sacks from Fiesta Mart on Ross and Greenville. Called today to reserve our bugs and he told me that the medium size is currently $1.69/lb, but will be $0.99/lb on Saturday. The "select" sizes are $2.49/lb, with no drop in price expected.

This is absurdly cheap. I've never had a bad experience with Fiesta's crawfish other than having to clean them a lot more than usual, but I'm concerned that I'm about to get a bunch of dead crawfish.

Are prices this low right now, or should I try somewhere else?

UPDATE: Surprisingly out of 220 lbs, only about 10 crawfish were dead. They were decently sized, too. Zero complaints. The boil was great! If you are in Dallas, Fiesta on Ross has the cheapest crawfish I've seen in years.

According to the resident expert here, farmers are getting $1 a pound, so yea in Dallas it would be a huge red flag to me.

I know the HEB near me in the kingwood area of Houston have had them under $2 a pound all month. We last boiled on Good Friday and it was under $2 but I can’t remember exactly what it was. They admit that the lose a little on it but make it up on all the other shite you are going to buy. I expect it will be near $1.50 here soon.

I can't speak to the quality of the crawfish at that store, but I buy shrimp and redfish from there for half the price of other places and its good.

it similar to how the grocery stores are starting to be cheaper here in BR because they are just selling them for cost, just to get you in the store to buy everything else.

Boyd’s seafood in Texas City currently has field run for $.97 a pound. They own the farms they get crawfish from in LA and truck it in daily. They sell it cheaper than anyone I’ve seen before. Back to Fiesta, they are probably selling like another poster said at cost. They get you on cheap crawfish in hopes you buy all the other stuff for the boil from them.

I don't think fiesta is paying just $0.99 a pound when you factor in transportation.

DFW Crawfish (on the crawfish app in Dallas) had them for 1.75/lb on Sunday this weekend. Size was a solid medium, and they were live, kickin' and definitely from the spill way (you can tell by the smell, as I've always been told).

Sounds like the farmers over there in Dallas have not learned the excuses the La boys cry about. Good work Dallas.

These places are shipping them in from LA. Or at least the good places are.
