My mom recently went on a trip to Alaska and brought me back an Ulu knife and cutting bowl. I didn’t think I’d use it all that much, but the bowl makes dicing vegetables very easy and efficient- something I’m not real good at if left with a knife and a regular cutting board.

Ulu Knives

Have you ever heard of these knives?

I received one as a gift many years ago, used it once in about 10 years and gave it away.

That's what the Hailstone's on life below zero use. Looks decent. I assume you'd get good cutting leverage by leaning on it.

Got a decorative fancy carved handle and engraved blade one from my parents trip up there to visit relatives and tour the state mid to late 90's.

Dad's oldest sister homesteaded what is now the south western quarter of Anchorage. Sold it to the city with the provision she got to name the streets. That's how I have a street named after me up there. She couldn't remember my late cousin's name but remembered us always chasing each other around at the couple of family reunions she was able to make it back to Bastrop for.

Parents also brought back Kona coffee from that trip. One of Aunt Mary's kids went native and lived on Kona for a couple decades with some separatists and they grew coffee to fund their village. Then he moved back to Alaska and got back into oil with a brother.

Ya see Aunt Mary bought property in Hawaii when one of her husbands slipped on lettuce in the 1st chain grocery store in Anchorage and injured his back (she outlived 3 husbands and several kids, moved to AK in 1938 or 39). Half her kids lived in HI the other half lived in AK. One of her daughters was a semi well known interior decorator, redid Sly Stallones property in HI.

We use to give those stupid things away as Christmas gifts when we lived Alaska to our family. Not a fan.

Just got one for Christmas. Looks like a Kligon weapon. Didn't come with the ulu bowl though.

Ha, so that is what those are called. My wife has one with the indented cutting board and uses it to fine cut/mince cilantro, red onions, other fresh herbs to top various soups, tacos, etc. I find a knife works better for me.

My parents got me one on a trip to Alaska when I was in school. It was a great kitchen item for a college kid, considering it did almost any task and cut pizza well. I used it a ton then advanced to actual knives at some point.

Love mine for chopped salads and chopping bbq. They key for me is finding a bowl the same contour as the knife

I have like 6 of them. They are great for fileting salmon, processing them from whole etc. Also good for slicing/cubing meat.

Good for cutting veggies too!

I use them more than a knife now.
