TW is huge and will have a larger selection than anywhere else in town. Just like HD, Costco or a large grocery store, Jack.

In terms of liquors yeah they have a giant selection which is really cool if you like cocktails. I had trouble finding something specific at the one in Lafayette (chartreuse yellow). Also there are a couple of different places in town that are as good or better on import beer selection. I don’t know shite about wine so I can’t comment on that. I do typically choose to shop local stores though for stuff like this because the higher end groceries also bring other stuff to the table that Total Wine never will, and they go out of their way to stock hard to find items (like chartreuse or st germain, or beligan import beer for instance).

I’ll support local businesses all day long but nothing drives me to a chain or competitor faster than a rude local business taking customers for granted. Local businesses take note, don’t treat us like you are doing us a favor by selling us merchandise.

TW will of course have a big selection because they are a big space. But they can’t get items that any other business doesn’t have access to.

Oh look, more of the moronic PT brigade coming through, pretending as though they can’t read or understand the English language. Has someone remembered to set the timer that lets you guys know when to say that I’m upset/emotional/triggered? I know that part is very important to you

I understand Taylor Calandro being upset about Total Wine. I'm a loyal customer of Calandro's, even though their prices are high as giraffe pussy. I go there for the quality and selection of a lot of their items. Also because there ain't always a thousand people there. And the most of the poors stay away too. Poors are trashy--I should know because I am one, but I have upper middle class tastes in food and spirits.

That being said, I will frequent Total Wine as well. There will be many things there that Calandro's won't have.

This town can support both businesses.

Sure they have a larger footprint, but as far as individual SKUs, no

You've never been in one. They have massively more skus. The varied selection in tequila and vodka alone is mind boggling

Total Wine business model: make no money on any top
selling items to get people in the door to buy their private label garbage

Didn't even know they had private label stuff. That's how little prominence it has in their stores. What they do is use their volume to be able to sell cheaper. They kick everybody's arse on the prices of the booze I like.

TLDR: I hate Total Wine for no specific reason other than they're going 2 miles away from our family owned and operated 80 year old business

And there we have it. Too damn bad. Welcome to the real world

Total wine in Mandeville is freaking awesome. I will still go to acquistapace sometimes, but TW selection and prices are just so good. The app is really nice as well. I can make lists of everything I want ahead of time. I became a grand reserve member much quicker than I should have

There's a definite problem with the booze supply in the Baton Rouge area right now. I was talking to a bud who lives in Central last night and he mentioned the Taaka vodka he was drinking. I commented as to why he was drinking that nasty shite and he told me about the problems finding his usual brands right now.

Why is he pissed? Because if you owned a family business who has been part of the local community for decades, lived in the community, spent money in the community, supported kids baseball teams, donated to the fundraiser for the guy with cancer, etc, you wouldn’t want to see the same people who live in the community with you talking up a national chain that hasn’t yet put a dime into the community.

Maybe his customers aren't as loyal as he thought they were.

And if you have been in the community for 80 years and don't have enough stickiness with your customers to withstand this competition... maybe you need to look in the mirror.

I'll say this... in Metairie... after TW came in... Dorignac's upped their game and they are better for it.

I'm a big fan of Calandros as well, I think they do as good a job as any local business trying to be customer centric, and they have items no one else carries.

That said, there is simply a space issue with them(and that I think they have fallen off in the beer department last couple times I was through that way, I'm honestly not sure what their stocking strategy is anymore with how scattershot their inventory is and why they are so reluctant with singling out bottles). And pretty much all the liquor/grocery stores have the same problem.

Do they? I'm looking at the prices online at the Lafayette store, and they don't really seem much cheaper if at all than the local options. Matching the Total Wine and Martin's prices online, they seem to be the same for what I usually order. Plus Martin's has same day delivery.

Also, it doesn't look like Total Wine carries Cruzan Black Strap (prefer it to Goslings), or Bacoo (our favorite sipping rum for the price), which can both usually be found at Calandros.

I hope they sell stuffed jalapeños there. Maybe then I could get a pack. Would have to get a second mortgage to purchase them from Calandros. Or the select steaks yall were selling for $20 a pound

They do. Just because they don't have exactly what you want doesn't mean they don't have a wider selection than Calandros. How can they not when they've got so much more shelf space.

As far as price, that probably has to do with Louisiana's pricing regulations.

Here in San Jose, you'll find Safeway runs specials sometimes that are close, but they have none of the selection. The tequila selection here is mind boggling. I've been to the Lafayette store and noticed they had a smaller selection of tequila compared to here. No Asombroso for one thing, whereas here they'll have multiple types of that brand.

Gotcha. Though, if it's the same prices here in BR, I'll probably stick to Bin Q, Martins, and Calandros. Going to Bin Q when they're freely pouring samples from behind the counter is a good time.
