Carolinas kinda dominating that list.

Love me some Lewis. I haven’t even been to Rodney Scott’s yet because every time we want some BBQ I can’t find a reason to go anywhere else.

Will echo what others have said on Home Team. I’d be disappointed if there were only a couple dozen better BBQ places in all the south than what I’ve had there.

Well…. No places in Louisiana, so at least they got that part right.

#13 Cattleack is excellent, but the location is a weird. It’s in a business park and there is literally nowhere to park your vehicle. They only have 4 or 5 spots at the restaurant, and all the neighboring businesses have blocked off parts of the street parking.

All I can say is that anyplace in Texas is going to be overrated and overpriced. They think giving you a couple slices of stale, thin white bread is adequate with a $30 plate of ribs with two sides. And more than likely, the beans will be flavorless if you get them as a side.

I just ate at Stanley's in Tyler and Tyler's BBQ in Amarillo. The beans in Amarillo couldn't have been more flavorless, but at least they gave you a stale piece of unbuttered Texas toast rather than a stale piece of regular old thin sandwich like they do at Stanley's.

Never been to either but are you suggesting that the beans at two joints (among hundreds) is somehow defining of Texas BBQ?

You've piqued my curiosity though. What are some joints with flavorful beans that you would recommend? And, what kind of bread are we talking?

Almost all BBQ lists are jokes. BBQ is incredibly subjective and hyper-regional.

All lists are jokes. The best way to get a lot of downvotes/bitching or get ratioed is to make a list of your favorite anything. Food of any sort is one of the worst. People have extremely different palates.

The beans at Stanley's were fine, I should have specified that the issue there was portion size. That went for the whole meal. For the price of the side, the portions were very small. And the bread was two pieces of stale thin white bread. I did think the beans there were better than what you usually find.

Tyler's had the horrible beans, and the stale Texas toast.

I can't remember the names of the places but I've eaten a lot of Texas bbq over the years, esp around Houston and Lufkin. And from that sample, yes, they often use chili beans, and they're often not well seasoned. It's something I've noticed. They use a more 'southwestern style' when it comes to the beans. At least that's what the Texas residents I've spoken to attribute the difference to. You can tell it in some of the seasonings they use on the meats as well, but that's not an issue for me, as long as it's done right.

Heirloom BBQ in ATL should be in the top 25 of that list. Texan husband, Asian wife, awesome Q. Look at their instagram if you are a doubter.

Yeah Heirloom not being on there and Fox at the bottom of the list is pretty bad. Admittedly there may well be 45 BBQ spots better than Fox Bros., but it shouldn't be that low on THIS list.

Obviously the Alabama ones being top 20 are ridiculous. Fresh Air is not a top 50 BBQ place in the South, much less top 5. I like it fine, and if you want an example of traditional, boring GA BBQ from the last 50 years, Fresh Air is a good example of it and one of the last ones around (think Harolds if you're from Atlanta). But it's probably not top 10 in Georgia unless you're just trying to keep that style represented.

Never went to Rodney Scott's when I lived in Charleston because I had no reason to not get Lewis.
Home Team is okay, it's a good place to hang out with decent barbecue but Lewis is literally down the street from their downtown location.
Swig and Swine had the best pork and burnt end in Charleston IMO

Also barbecue is so subjective - Texas places will almost never rank high to me because I'm not a sausage guy. I've been to Black's and Kreutz and they are fine but they aren't better than Lewis to me.

Lewis is just about perfect and does everything well

Not following you on this. John Lewis is TX style BBQ. He's done a commendable job of exporting TX BBQ to the Lowcountry and yet there are probably 10-12 joints in Houston alone they surpass him.

Where did this misbegotten idea that TX BBQ is centered on sausage come from? And doesn't Lewis still sell his hot guts?

Lewis is Texas style, I just like his version better than the other Texas places I've tried. He still does the hot guts - many rate it quite highly.

When I tried the classic Texas places was told to try the brisket and sausage - my impression was TX bbq specialty were those two things. Sausage just doesn't do anything for me at any place. Their brisket was good but nothing earth-shattering - I prefer Lewis' version.
Admittedly have not tried Franklin's where he came from.
I've never heard of any of this esteemed Houston bbq

Rankings usually don’t take consideration of picky eaters’ individual preferences. And since when does Texas BBQ center around sausage?

Dreamland is one of the most overrated bbq places out there. It's definitely not the best in Tuscaloosa, that belongs to Archibald's, and all of their other locations are sub-par at best. Some of the best BBQ places I have ever been would never be on this list because they are straight backwood shacks.

i ate at the one in tuscaloosa in june...it fricking sucks and is ghetto as hell. ribs were not very good. could name plenty of places with much much better bbq

and im sorry, maybe its because of me being from swla and so close to texas, but Brisket=BBQ.
