Anybody got any good tips. I’ve seen some tips online but it still seems to be a crapshoot.

TIA

Make sure the field spot is yellowish
Make sure it seems heavy for its size. A lighter watermelon is going to be less juicy

Thump several. Listen for a deep sound....yellow spot, heavy, etc.

The stem should be dry

Yellowish field spot, 2-3 fingers wide webbing should get you a pretty good one…

If all else fails just get 3 of them. If one isn’t good toss it and try the next. Life’s too short to eat sub par watermelon.

All I know is that I follow all the rules and I still manage to choose a POS

I have seen this image before on social media and the orange field spot is 100% accurate.

Put your ear to it and thump it. That serves no useful purpose other than to make you look like you know what you are doing.

Let me come pick it, then pick the opposite. Ones I get always suck

With any juicy fruit, the heavier, the better.

I usually have good luck with watermelon. Now cantaloupe seems to be the real toss up for me

Yellow spot and steer clear of seedless.

I find seeded much better than seedless ones.

For cantaloup buy a Honeykiss melon. You can recognize them by the sack they come in. It's like a mini crawfish sack but either green or blue.

One color is to slice and eat the other are for smoothies.
