doctor says wire-bristle barbecue brushes can pose a serious threat when tiny strands of wire fall off and stick to grilled food. He has had to remove the needle-like bristles that became lodged in patients' throats

Is there a good alternative? Not cleaning it at all?

have a friend who is a Radiologist. He said he sees it all the time - (including small fish bones) that end up perforating the digestive track. Had a buddy who almost died due to the fish bone. Docs kept treating him for flu like symptoms when he fact he had a perforated duodenum and almost went septic.

I use a "billy bar" that works really well. They can be found online, don't know if they are in stores. I'm using it on a Primo but think it would work on most.

Where do the pieces get stuck? I usually wire brush, then I take the flat metal on the end and scrape it all. I don't see how I could have some pieces left over especially that are not visible.

Don't get me wrong, I could definitely see how this could happen especially after you make something like ribs or chicken and put a bunch of sauce on them.

Cut an onion in half, dip in cooking oil, grab it with a long set of tongs and use this to scrub the grill prior to cooking.

Same. Before I use it, I also take the brush inside and remove detached and obviously loose bristles with a hemostat.

That's the Mexican grill treatment--it works pretty good. I gave a wooden grill scraper as a gift last Christmas, I'll have to call the recipient and see how well it worked. The wood wears away as you scrape, making grooves specific to your grill.

I heard of this 1 1/2 or 2 years ago. It was like the spider under the toilet seat or rat crap on the top of the coke can. I still use a wire brush as people have for decades. I have never had a strand stick to my food and don't see how anyone could chew and swallow food without noticing a piece of wire in their mouth.

I think I would cook on a dirty but sterilized grate before going through that ridiculous amount of effort.

Yeah, well, I typically remove a half dozen bristles that way. Takes a couple of minutes. Why wouldn't you do it?

I don't own hemostats for one.

I have eaten a whole hell of a lot of grilled food in my life. All of it originating with the cleaning of the grill with a wire brush after the initial burn of charcoal. Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, Canada, Hawaii, etc, etc. I have been to family reunions, mine and others, cookouts at my friends who live in the country, cookouts at the lake, (cooked three days at Toledo Bend for Easter and guess what I used to clean the grill) and friends who lived up the street who cooked for people in the military, neighbors and friends (huge cookouts) etc etc etc. I have never seen anyone be carted off to the ER because of a wire brush.

This is the synthetic brush companies paying doctors to say not to do something that has been done longer than you and I have been alive to increase their business.

It's like telling your 95 year old neighbor not to use Tide detergent because it may kill him even though he has used Tide detergent his whole life and is 95 years old.

Oh, don't sit on a toilet seat because a Brazilian spider may be underneath it waiting for you and don't ever drink soda from a can - the stuff from the warehouses including rat and mouse shite will kill you.

Good luck in your fight to remain alive. So many people dying from grill brushes these day is really alarming.

That level of argumentative passion usually comes from someone who knows he's wrong but can't bring himself to admit it.

Yeah, I may be wrong, but I am still alive and have never been to the ER or know anyone who has because of the use of a wire brush to clean a cooking grate before cooking.

Could just be that me and the millions of people who have survived are lucky. I don't know. I'll give my thanks tonight before going to sleep and use my wire brush Wednesday when I do finger ribs on the Weber grill.

*** Did you know that if a car coming towards you with their high beams on, it is a gang (crips, bloods, who knows) and if you flash your high beams they will chase you down and kill you)? Happened to me the other night. I'm still dead because of missing this informative internet information. Good thing too, I was scared to death I was going to die from eating a bristle from a wire grill cleaning brush.
